It must stay in 2D. I should not be altered, like the remasters of the Final Fantasy games.

Uhh, what? III and IV have been remade in 3D. And unless you're counting the smartphone and tablet versions there hasn't been any remasters for I-VI.

I would like to see zelda 1 and zelda2 remade in 3d. It's probably not going to happen because they got ported into many systems over the years.

That wasn't the question....

It depends on the type of game for me personally.

If I had to choose though... I'd say 2D.

I'm sure most people feel that way too, which is why I made it just in general.

I prefer remasters (basically improving all old assets) when I want to play a game I never had a chance to play before.Though remakes can be good. And 2D or 3D remakes? That would be on a case by case basis. I really will accept either for the remake as long as the overall quality of the game is good.

Do video game companies even keep NES or SNES assets? Lol? I know Square Enix don't.

Remaster - 2D

Remake - 3D

Remaking a 2D game in 3D will make it feel like a different game completely.

Though if the 2D one was phenomenal in the first place and the game play wasn't shite, remastering it just so people who didn't have those consoles could play it is good enough

Didn't Square Enix not even keep all their assets from KH? Unless if that is common practice I am not sure if we can use them as examples.Though you do have a point. ESPECIALLY since the remake might only have ties to the current right holders, who may not even be in contact with the dev team anymore.

And you are better off just remaking it than ripping assets from a cartridge. (IMHO)Though I realized I wanted to say something on my first post that I didn't. RE:COM was over all better than the GBA version. And they converted it to true 3D pretty well, but there were little things when remade that bugged me.One of the things was it was seemingly a lot less generous with mog points.Another thing was that room connections didn't automatically form in between made rooms. So you might have to remake a room just so you can use a door. While both of these little things were where I felt like the remake went wrong and not 2D sprites to 3D models.

Yes, Square Soft did lose all their assets. I believe the only games Square Soft kept the assets from were FINAL FANTASY XI, FINAL FANTASY X-2 and maybe FINAL FANTASY TACTICS Advance.

Chain of Memories was developed by Jupiter, Re:Chain of Memories was developed by the Kingdom Hearts team. I prefer Re:CoM.

Well, I guess my answer depends on what you mean.

If it's a REMAKE, meaning a new version of the same game from scratch, then yes, I would always prefer it in 3D. If I could have my way, I would have Sonic Team remake all of the Sonic games from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2006 using the hedgehog engine in a vein similar to Generations, because really, that's what I want, and I'm sure that's what other fans want. I know that's Genesis and Master System talk and not NES and SNES, but I don't really have much of a classic Nintendo background to draw from. I guess I would love to see how classics such as the first Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda would look in full 3D.

If it's a REMASTER, as in it's the same thing, just polished up a bit with a bunch of added stuff, not really drastically changing the experience but rather enhancing it, then that kind of depends on the original format of the game. If it was a 2D game to begin with, I'm not sure how 3D would work. Maybe as the 3DS classic re-releases? Otherwise, you would kind of still have to stick to the original format of the game. If it was 3D to begin with though, then you would probably do things like they did in KH 1.5. Update the character models, update the textures and backdrops, upscale the graphics, maybe make a new version of the soundtrack, throw in an extra level or two, change the aspect ratio if it was 4:3 to begin with, and other things like that. But we're talking NES and SNES era games, so I'm going to assume it's strictly 2D. If that's the case, there would be no other choice but to stick to the 2D format while adding in the STEREOSCOPIC 3D that 3DS re-releases get, which would normally just do things like make the backgrounds and foregrounds look more layered and things like that.

So if you were talking remakes, then yes, I would always prefer 3D. If you're talking remasters, then I'm fine either way, it just really depends. I'm sure most people understood what you meant, but I'm also sure some people may have been a bit confused and that it may have affected their decisions.

I said remakes. This poll has nothing to do with remasters.

Oh, then by all means, 3D all the way. I think they've stayed as 2D games long enough. If nostalgic whiners really wanted to make a fuss, I guess they could make them "2.5D", but to me, 3D is progress, and I really would like to see a 3D spin on some old titles. If we're going to look towards the past, we may as well look through the lens of the present and future.

I think I prefer 2D remakes.Of all the remakes of NES and SNES games I've play, the 2D one looked much better, like Super Mario Allstar or Final Fantasy IV complete collection, but I don't mind 3D remakes as they look just as good or even better then the original game.Final Fantasy III on PSP was alright,Castle of Illusion on PS3 look so much better, but Megaman Mavrick hunter X and Castlevania Dracula X chronicles looked much better in their original versions.

I think that they should be a mixture, actually.  For sidescrollers, like Metroid and Super Mario Bros., they should be in 2.5D.  Games that have a perspecitve like 2D Zelda games (except Zelda 2) should follow the example of A Link between Worlds or Bravely Default.  The traditional perspective is kept, but all the graphics are 3D.  That makes it a 3D game while still feeling like a traditional 2D game.
