Speculation on users and their avatars

Recommended Posts

I know we all build connotations to people given their avatar, and so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on avatars you see users use.  Just because a person may have a female avatar do you immediately assume they're female, or visa versa?  Do you gauge a person's personality given their avatar?  Perhaps their maturity?

For myself, I just choose whatever avatar suits my fancy at the time, namely favorite characters of mine.  I use male and female characters interchangeably, and sometimes I don't use characters at all.  Sometimes I'll choose a character that reflects me, but sometimes not.  It really just depends on what I feel at the time. : P

Interestingly, though, I tend to determine a person based on their avatar.  If it's Riku I tend to guess it's a female user (all them Riku fangirls : P), and if it's an object rather than a character I tend to guess that the user is older.  Sometimes I try to gauge the seriousness or lax personality by the avatar, but none of these things are really telling.  I was just curious to hear what everyone else speculated when looking at others' avatars.

Suprisingly, i do auto. think that for some people they are the same gender as their avatar, unless i know them personally. I thought Neos was a girl for awhile until i realized he wasnt.

I've always viewed other people's avatars as both a statement of interests and a hint toward how they would like to be viewed as a person, especially the latter when they choose a specific character as a representation. I usually base gender off of word usage unless specifically stated somewhere.

Essentially this. As for gender, I follow my own rule of the internet: Assume everyone is a guy until proven otherwise [because afterall, there are no such things as girls on the interwebz.    /sarcasm]

Well my avatar is a portrait of myself. But anyways, for some reason i pretty much see a person's avatar as who they are or what they look like. So it feels weird when someone doesn't look like their avatar in real life xD

My brain just automactically connects the avatar with the person's gender. Sometimes I toy with the idea the people's avatars are who they really are. xD

For me the avatar determines the gender... which is quit stupid, since I use female avatars myself sometimes... hahaha

But, I think everyone who has a cartoon avatar as incredibly handsome person! until I see a real pic of the person ofcousre... ;P

So you're all beautiful people! ^^

I usually also connect a Riku avatar to females for whatever reason. xD Aside from that, yeah, I typically assume someone's the same gender as their avatar (Which is a bit weird, considering I've used female avatars a few times. xD). As for my own avatar, I usually go with a character from something I've been getting really interested in lately, like I went with Neku since I've been thinking back to TWEWY soon (And I might change it soon. xD). I've noticed that I sometimes change how I type depending on my avatar though, like I feel more serious with this Neku avatar, and I didn't feel serious at all back when I had Black Star from Soul Eater as mine. It's kind of weird. xD
