I mean they were mentioned so, why would they be mentioned if they weren't to be important?? There's no need if they are not going to appear, but if they are referenced is because Nomura took the time to do it and he wanted us to think about it... If Sora's mom was heard before could be coincidence but now that his father was mentioned (damn spoilers) I can think is because they have something to do... In Terra's scenario, when he goes to Destiny Islands, Riku tells Terra that Sora's dad brought them over to the play island because they're too young to go by themselves. He really didn't have a big part at all. Here's a link to the video. Riku mentions Sora's dad at about 3:22. Note that this video has heavy spoilers. Watch at your own risk.
