Sora96 17,256 Posted March 11, 2014 Sony and Panasonic revealed this week the Archival Disc, a new professional-use optical disc with storage capacities ranging from 300GB at launch up to 1TB in the future. The companies plan to ship the next-generation standard in summer 2015. Cliff Bleszinski Says He's Done With Disc-Based Games The new disc standard is aimed at the archive market, with Sony saying it realizes that optical discs will need larger storage formats in the future. In addition to the data increase — for comparisons, a dual-layer Blu-ray can hold up to 50GB — Archival Discs will "have excellent properties to protect themselves against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored," according to the two Japanese companies. Not much is said about consumer usage for the Archival Disc, as Sony and Panasonic say that they "plan to actively promote this next-generation high-capacity optical disc standard in the professional field in order to offer an effective solution for protecting valuable data into the future." The two companies aim to market the Archival Disc to the film industry and online cloud centers. Ruby Rose 8,591 Posted March 11, 2014 So Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III can now contain 300GB worth of content on their discs? If that's the case, Kingdom Hearts III can truly have a 200 hour campaign, 250 hours if you do side quests and secret bosses 7 King Demise, Shard the Gentleman, 143436611Xxcc and 4 others reacted to this

Tigerruss 576 Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) So Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III can now contain 300GB worth of content on their discs? If that's the case, Kingdom Hearts III can truly have a 200 hour campaign, 250 hours if you do side quests and secret bosses I know what you are thinking but the PS4 doesn't have the archival disc reader. So, the PS5 would be the earliest possible Sony console to have it, and since the PS4 was just released within the last year Sora96 is right. Anyways, I think the archival disc sounds like a great archival system. Upto 1TB of storage space per disc, and resistant to weathering? That is bound to be useful for many companies.
