TerraRedeemed 255 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Basically, in order to travel through time you need to be free of a physical form. After that, a version of you has to exist at the destination in time. Once reached you may only move forward as time dictates. I'm pretty sure because of that last one you can only travel back, you cannot travel forward. And im pretty sure you can't change the past. It is predestined. For example, A YouTube video can only show up to what has been buffered (the present). You can go back and rewatch events occur but you cannot go beyond what hasn't buffered. Travelling forward must be necessary to some degree, though, or else you couldn't have Young Xehanort in Dream Drop Distance (unless they all went to a past version of TWTNW at the end of the game somehow)
Hero of Light XIV 2,381 Posted March 5, 2014 Time travel can work in the conventional sense: you can move further forward in time and you can potentially move backward as well. In order to travel ANYWHERE in time, you have to leave your body behind in some way or another, and there must be a version of you at your destination, be it in the past or future. If you've moved back in time, you can't go back any further, so you can only travel forward in time. This is due to time's nature of moving forward, so you can only skip ahead. Think of it like using a remote control to watch a movie, where the rewind button is broken but the fast forward button is working perfectly. It's like that, only it isn't. Where was I...? Oh yes! Time travel! Ahem, anyway, you can continue moving forward in time, presumably beyond the point from which you departed, though it is never expressly explained. It has been said that time travel has always been possible in dreams, so dreams may act as a conduit to certain methods of time-travel, though mostly to past versions of worlds that have been lost to darkness. Likewise, time travel can be used to enter the dream world through method of going back in time to the point where the world in question fell to darkness and became a sleeping world. The Kingdom Hearts version of time travel seems to be very strict and rather calculated. In order for an effective travel, one should plan ahead to go the furthest into the past they can and avoid any mistakes that would require additional trips into the past, as that would be impossible. If one were to move forward to certain points in time linearly before returning to one's original departure point (ie: the present), one must also plan carefully the linear order in which they travel, because again, one can not return back to undo any mistakes in an earlier point in time. One must also keep in mind that while certain events and details can be changed or manipulated, destiny is apparently still unavoidable and can never be altered in the long run, so some things are still meant to happen and can never be changed (ie: fixed points in time). This version of time travel requires lots of strategy if achieved by one person, but one thing that is never clear is what happens if someone were to be directly given the power by a time traveler. Young Xehanort explains that he was given his time traveling abilities from Ansem the Seeker of Darkness, meaning that while Young Xehanort was free to travel through time, Ansem was left stranded on the islands until the day when they were destroyed. While Young Xehanort can clearly travel forward in time, it is never explained about the order in which he traveled. If the laws of time still apply to him, he may have traveled forward in a linear fashion, gathering recruits and manipulating events carefully in the chronological order in which they happened, so that by the time he arrived in Dream Drop Distance, he had already done everything he needed and simply teleported with the realm of dreams between different locations. However, the process in which he obtained his powers is different than how time travel is supposed to work. Rather than giving up his body and having to target differing versions of himself, he was granted the ability to time travel by an older version of himself, meaning that he didn't need to give up anything in order to gain the ability. This is a contradiction to the rule, so there's no telling if he is limited by the normal rules of time travel or not. For all we know, this transference of the ability could allow him to freely travel to any point he wants, past or future, with no limits or drawbacks whatsoever. This would resemble a more common form of time travel that most of us are familiar with, where the traveler is free to go to any point in time so long as they don't touch anything. Either theory could explain how exactly Young Xehanort operated, but in the grand scheme of things, it's probably not important. The main concern is despite how rigid and strict the laws of time travel are in the Kingdom Hearts universe, it is possible that there may be a loophole or two that can be used to get around the rules. Other than that, the time travel in this universe still holds to the same basic rules and effects that generic time travel in other works tend operate. The main trick is trying to wrap your head around the concept in the first place. Hope that helped. Basically, in order to travel through time you need to be free of a physical form. Yes you can, you just have to wait for it to rebuffer and relinquish all the buffering progress it had made previously. What kind of streaming engine are you talking about, because that isn't YouTube you are describing my friend. It sounds more like a live DVR recording. TerraRedeemed 255 Posted March 5, 2014 That's true. Didn't occur to me. And I suppose that whenever we get around to fighting all 13 of them he will have to travel to that point in time too. It may just be that he was allowed to travel to a point in time that the most recent version existed in. Perhaps every moment after that point hasn't been made.
