Sukai 37 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) H.E.R.O. Highly Elite Recruit Officer Chapter One This story begins at a small little neighborhood park. There was nobody there but one teenage boy sitting up on top of the tall slide, everyone else went home because it was getting late. The sun was setting and the sky was turning that pinkish orange color it gets sometimes. The boy on the slide sledded down and then hopped of half way. He landed on the ground with the dirt below to rise just for a second then fell on to his shoes. He wore blue, white and black skater shoes with blue jeans resting on top of them. There was a tear on the right pants leg and a chain hanging off two belt loops on his left. He had a red jacket that had a blue square patch on his left elbow. His jacket was over a white muscle shirt and an old rusty locket with a picture of his dad. He had medium length light brown hair and green eyes. He looked young but you could tell he has been through a lot, the stern look of a harsh past hardened his face. The boy turned to face the park’s swing set. He could see the bush on the other side begin to rustle a bit then the whole place went nearly silent, all that could be heard was the wind blowing, the chains on the swings creaking and some people down the street; about a couple blocks away. The young man knew something was in that bush and it wasn’t human. So to quench his curiosity, the boy slowly walked over to the bush to check it out. He got about a few feet away when a rather large black creature leaped out of the bush and into the air. The creature was about three to four feet tall and very slim. It was pure black and had dark red eyes. Ripples of dark energy was shedding off of it, the boy could feel darkness as if it was a small weight on his whole body, making him feel just a little bit heavier. The creature was in the air and then kicked off towards the boy for an attack. The boy jumped back to evade the slash but the fiend was too quick for him. The beast reached out and scratched the boy’s chest. He fell on his back but quickly flipped back up and side stepped the dark figure’s second strike. The creature thrust straight forwards as the boy side stepped the blow, catching his arm and twirling the thing over. The monster hit the ground but never stopped twirling until he flipped back up and hit the boy once more. He flew back and landed into the seat of a swig which he swung back then forward, holding on to the swing’s chain the boy managed to dodge a swipe from the beast which cut the chain. Then the boy took the broken chain and swung it around its neck and tightened. “You’re not so tough, are ya?” The boy claimed. His voice was young and firm, he sounded about 15 or 16 years old. He tightened once more and smirked. Then the creature let out a loud screech, releasing a powerful wave of energy. The energy busted the chain into single links and sent the boy flying back. “…Never mind.” He said as he rose to his feet and wiped the blood from his newly busted lip. “Well… Seems you’ll be a bit of trouble for me.” He looks down and sees a nice sized stick. “But I’m not letting you have me!” He exclaimed as he reaches down and takes the stick and charges at his enemy with a full forced swing, the stick hit the beast’s side but the vile creature was unaffected. The boy continued to swing but by the fifth strike the stick broke and the fiend knocked the boy back a few more feet. The boy looked at the dark being, which smirked; then he looked at his broken weapon, then back at the being. It was creeping closer and closer, step by step. The boy was scared, his eyes went wide then closed tight as he yelled, “YOU CAN’T HAVE ME!” Then out of nowhere, a bright blue light of energy shot out of the broken stick. The energy was shooting everywhere and out of control then it exploded and hit the Creature, knocking it a few yards back; then the energy vanished. The boy opened his eyes. Smoke was clouding up the park; all he could see was a humanoid silhouette through the smoke. His eye lids grew heavy and began to droop but he forced them open, the shadow was closer. Then there was a light, a bright blue light. Everything the boy was seeing now was frame by frame, he was about to pass out; whatever light he released from the stick drained nearly all his energy. He saw a man in a suit of some sort of advanced armor with a helmet that covered his face and flashes of him carrying the boy to safety. •†• The boy began to awaken; feeling dazed and confused, pain shot through his body. He did not recognize the room he was in; it looked like some sort of infirmary. The room mostly empty except for a sink, some cabinets and the bed he laid in. He sat up and began to look around, wondering where he was. He immediately changed his focus to the door to his left as someone entered the room. The man was wearing a similar armor to man who saved the boy, must be some sort of uniform. The uniform was unique, something he has never seen before. It was all white with grey designs across it, it covered his whole body and included armored grieves, gauntlets, shoulder pads and a helmet. The right arm had weird orbs like things on the glove, elbow and shoulder. “Oh, hey you’re up. That’s good I was just checking up on you.” He said. The boy started to speak when the man stopped him. “Don’t worry kid, any questions you have will be answered as soon as Lieutenant Cardin gets here. He saw everything; he was actually the one that rescued you.” The man took off his helmet. He had flat orange hair and green eyes. His jaw and eyes were narrow. “By the way,” He held out his hand for a proper greeting. “Name’s Corporal Zane.” The boy reached out and shook Zane’s hand. “I’m Herro.” After Herro introduced himself another man entered the room, he stood firm and upright. Zane immediately stood to attention to this new arriver. “At ease, Corporal.” The man turned to face Herro. “Greetings, I’m Lieutenant Cardin and what might your name be?” Cardin sounded to be about in his early 30s. He finally took off his helmet; he had blue spikey hair and blue eyes. He looked calm and collective. “Herro.” He answered. “I assume you’ll be explaining some things to me.” Herro was so confused. He didn’t know what that thing was or where he was at. “Yes…” Lieutenant Cardin turned around and put his hands behind him. “I am not sure where to begin…” The lieutenant turned to face Herro again. “That things earlier… that was a Zarling. They are beings of darkness and feed off of two things; fear… and humans.” “Zarlings?” “Yes. We aren’t exactly sure where they came from yet but our research department is trying to find out. I f we could, we could stop them from the core and prevent any more from showing.” “And who are you guys anyway?” “Oh yes, sorry. That would probably be useful information wouldn’t it.” The Lieutenant stepped closer to Herro. “We are an organization known as H.E.R.O.” “Hero?” “Highly Elite Recruit Officers. We protect people from Zarlings.” Herro began to think to himself, Highly Elite Recruit Officers….Zarlings? “If this is true and you protect others, then why have I never heard of you or Zarlings and why did it take you so long to save me?” The tone in Herro’s voice started to rise a little bit. The Lieutenant held up his hand to calm him down. “Now, I was about to… but as I was about to make my move I noticed something; you we actually standing a chance in that fight. No ordinary human would be able to last three minutes in a fight against a Zarling. So I stopped and began to watch, to see if you had it.” “Had what?” “Shizo.” Lieutenant Cardin said plainly. A blank expression covered Herro’s face and Cardin smirked a little. “I expected that reaction. Shizo is energy inside gifted people. When you grabbed that stick and that energy exploited out, you were releasing your shizo as a last resort. Your body automatically released it in your time of need.” “Shizo…”This a lot to take in at once for Herro. “Okay but why bring me here?” “To offer you something.” Cardin reached into his pocket and handed Herro a card. Herro examined the card; it read ‘HERO PASS’. “What’s this?” “In three months there is a recruitment exam. Only people with this can enter the exam. I feel that you have potential to be a great officer.” The two officers began to leave the room. “Just think about it.” Cardin finished as he left the room for Herro to be alone with his wounds, the pass and his thoughts. Sukai 37 Posted February 9, 2014 Chapter TwoAbout a week has passed since Herro meet Lieutenant Cardin and was offered the H.E.R.O. Recruitment Exam Pass and Herro can’t get it out of his mind. H.E.R.O….Herro was now at home in his bedroom. It was dark because of the clothed sheets covering the windows but little rays of light were beaming through the few holes on the sheets. The whole place looked ragged and run down, like he hard on cash. Herro was sitting on his ragged bed with the ends of the mattress torn and his blanket ripped. Herro stood to his feet and a mouse ran back behind his dresser which was missing a drawer. Herro walked over to the door and had to lift the hinges back to place before he could open it. Herro left and walked down the hall there were holes everywhere, the whole place was trashed. “Hey, Mom” Herro walked over to the table where some eggs were on a plate on the table. “’Morning Herro.” She smiled; she always seemed to be cheerful even in their poor situation. “Eggs again…” “Yes dear.” “They’re great.” Herro lied. He was so burnt out on eggs but he knew that his mother was trying as hard as she could to make Herro happy. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.” Herro took one last bite and pushed his plate and stood up. “I’m done he said then started walking away. “Are you okay Herro?” She asked with concern. “I’m fine.” He lied again. There was too much on his mind to be okay. “I’m just not that hungry.” He opened the front door. “I’m gonna go for a walk.” “Okay dear, be safe.” “I will.” Herro then walked outside. Even the neighborhood looked like a great big slum. Everyone looked poor and was suffering. Herro eventually reached the park that he once confronted the Zarling. “Should I join H.E.R.O.?” He murmured to himself as he remembered his experience at the H.E.R.O. H.Q. •†• After Lieutenant Cardin and Corporal Zane left the infirmary three others entered. One was a female you could tell by the uniform and her hourglass figure. One man was holding a clipboard with some papers. “Hello,….” The woman holds out her hand. “…Herro.” He finished. “Herro… that’s funny. Herro ‘The new recruit at H.E.R.O.’ what a coincidence. Any who, I am Lieutenant Sierra, nice to meet you. I am here to explain things to make sure you completely understand who we are.” Herro nodded. “We are the Highly Elite Recruit Officers or H.E.R.O. for short. We fight Zarlings to protect those who can’t protect themselves. Our research department study Zarlings to understand more about them or even where they come from. But you already knew all of this, what you didn’t know is we are very underground so you can’t tell anyone about us. Another thing is we use Shizo which is energy in our body. It is very hard to control without one of these.” She pointed at her shoulder, there were those orb like things that the other Lieutenant had; one on her shoulder, elbow and hand. “These are Shizoji or ‘Energy Focusing Orbs’, they harness your Shizo and release it through the weapon equipped to your Shizoji.” Lieutenant Sierra pulled out a small high-tech looking stick out from behind her. “This handle is connected to my Shizojis on my arm, when I focus-“A beam of energy shot out of the handle and formed a beam sword. “I make my weapon with Shizo.” Herro couldn’t believe what he saw. A beam sword? Really? “Your weapon is decided during the exam depending on your scores so that way it would be more compatible with your Shizo. I believe that is all. Corporal Allen will handle your discharge.” She said as the Corporal walked up. Herro was paying attention to the others before but the other officer was writing down everything like he was taking notes. The Lieutenant and the other one left the room as Corporal Allen began with the discharge papers. After he finished he was escorted out the building, Herro saw a lot of this that he couldn’t understand; people training with all kinds of weapons, floating devices and holograms. They have all this stuff but everyone I know is suffering with money issues… •†• Herro was sitting at the park that he once confronted the Zarling and was saved by Lieutenant Cardin. “Should I join H.E.R.O.?” He murmured to himself as he thought of his experience at the H.E.R.O. H.Q. when his friends walked up. “Ey! Herro!” A teenaged boy with reddish orange hair gelled back and orange eyes. “What’s happenin’ man?” He also wore ragged clothes with a torn up blue scarf hanging over his shoulder. “yeah, you look so out of it Herro.” A teenage girl with purple hair and purple eyes. She was wearing a blue dress that is ragged and torn at the bottom. “Are you okay?” “Kyle, Aora! No it’s nothing just had a lot on my mind…” Herro knew he couldn’t tell anyone about H.E.R.O. but how could he lie to his closest friends? And how could he leave them. Then Herro smile because he thought of something that he figured would make his decision. How could I leave them…
Sukai 37 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) Chapter Three It has been about two months since Herro was given that pass; Kyle, Aora and he were sitting on those swings talking like we always did, nothing special. We didn’t really talk about anything interesting but it made us laugh. “Did you see those squirrels?” Kyle laughed. “Yeah they were fighting over that one giant nut!” Aora continued. “They fought like two ninja jack rabbits! Hopping around, scratching and stuff!” Herro finished. The three of them were cracking up; then it happened. “That cold feeling again…” “What Herro?-“ Kyle started to ask but felt it too. “Wh-what is this feeling? It…its heavy…like something is breathing on me…” Aora was already on her hands and knees, struggling to breathe. Once Herro saw that he stood up off the swing. “Herro do you know what’s going on?” “Just stay back!” Herro commanded. “I don’t want anything to happen to you two.” This can’t possibly be a Zarling could it… no there isn’t anything else it could be. Several minutes passed with nothing happening but Aora’s face began to grow pale and she has been beginning to have shortness of breath. I ran over to her and kneeled down beside her. “Aora, are you okay?” He she continued to try and breath. “Damn it…” He rose back to his feet. “You two should get away from here.” Herro reached down and picked up a small stick about as long as his hand. “What are you going to do with that?” Kyle joked, but then the joke became too real. “What ARE you going to do with that?” A cold, scratchy voice said. Herro grasped the stick with both hands and went into a fighting stance. “Get out of here!” He ordered his friends. “NOW!” But it was too late. Aora was laying on the ground out of air, eyes wide and gruel flowing from her mouth and Kyle was being held up in the air by his neck. Holding him was a more human liked Zarling. Herro stared at the Zarling for a minute speechless, eyes wide and jaw dropped before he pulled himself together. “I’ll tell you what I’m going to do!” Herro the tried to focus his Shizo but without a Shizoji he couldn’t do anything. C’mon c’mon c’mon! “Damn it….” The Zarling laughed and threw Kyle. “I’m listening.” Herro then threw the stick at the Zarling. “Gah!” The Zarling exclaimed as he blocked the stick but when he came to Herro was already in air with his leg drawn back for a kick. “I was going to do that!” He then kicked the Zarling across the face. Catching the Zarling off guard Herro was actually able to land a successful blow on the Zarling. When Herro landed on his feet he turned to face the Zarling and smirked “how was that?” The Zarling rubbed his face then smiled. “You shouldn’t have done that.” He then in a flash was holding Herro by the throat. He got a ticked off look on his face. “You just pissed be off!” He yelled then threw Herro into the air. “And you don’t want to make me angry!” He then opened his mouth and a dim light started to shine from the back of his mouth. “Because when I’m mad!” Then the Zarling shot a huge yellow blast out of his mouth towards Herro. Well… this is it… Sorry guys…Herro accepted that he wasn’t able to get away from this but that doesn’t mean that someone else couldn’t save him. Herro closed his eyes and hoped something would happen. He Herro opened his eyes he was safely on the ground with someone standing over him. “Well, looks like you could use some help.” The man stated. He was tall and looked rouge. He was wearing a cloak over what looked like a customized H.E.R.O. uniform. “But doon’t you worry about a thing… this Zarling is nothing.” The rouge fighter leaped over the Zarling and turned to face Herro as the Zarling split in half. Herro was left speechless; he was no match for that Zarling and here comes this guy and trashes it. “Don’t worry, I believe one day you’ll get this good. “ He smirked for a second but then seriousness became him. “But you need to go home. It’s not safe…” Herro knew he was right so he started for home when the rouge fighter continued. “And you should go to that exam.” With that the rouge fighter left and Herro was once again left with his thoughts. Herro began running for home when he just remembered something and stopped in his tracks. “Kyle, Aora! Damn it!” He turned around headed back to the park. Once he arrived he saw Kyle trying to wake up Aora. “Damn it…” “And what exactly just happened? What the hell was that?!” Kyle exclaimed. Herro just looked down at Aora. “Kyle… I going to be leaving soon… just do me a favor… watch out for Aora for me…” “What are you talking about?” Kyle exclaimed. Herro didn’t say anything but he knew he needed to join Herro to save those he cared for. Edited February 11, 2014 by Sukai

Arya Stark 1,337 Posted February 13, 2014 Excellent storyline so far, with good characterization of your protagonist. I would only suggest a few things. Make your character's personalities become obvious, and explicit in dialogue, and remember to make sure every character does have a personality and interesting development and history. Also, keep the story balanced between quiet development moments, and the captivating action scenes you've shown us so far. Besides that, it's pretty decent.
