Nomura has a thing for blue eyes

Has anyone else noticed that nearly every original Kingdom Hearts character has blue or greenish blue eyes? To prove my point let's name some shall we? Sora, Kairi, Riku, Naminé, Xion, Roxas, Axel/Lea, Ventus, Aqua, Terra and nearly every Organization member except Xemnas, Xigbar and Saix, though he had blue eyes as Isa. The only characters with brown eyes I can think of are Hayner and Pence. Having brown eyes myself I think it's a little unfair that there are so few brown eyed characters because it makes cosplaying more difficult. Perhaps Nomura sees blue eyes as symbolizing good and gold eyes as symbolizing bad because the three main Organization bad guys, all Xehanort forms and Vanitas have gold eyes plus Ansem the Wise who was an antagonist for a time whilst all the main protagonists have blue eyes. Or perhaps being Japanese he just thinks brown eyes are too mainstream and boring. Still wish he would mix things up a little more though.

It's not even limited to KH, either.  FF or Sqeenix protagonists, more often than not, will have blue eyes.  There will be a number of party members with them, too.  I've noticed this a while back, but I personally don't mind.  Blue eyes are pretty.

Wow yeah! The other day my friend told me : "Have you noticed all the main good characters in the game have blue eyes?" I was like "Your insane!" Turns out he was right, there are few exceptions there, like Hayner.

Yes, I've noticed. And there's SO many whose eyes are the exactly same color of blue! Of course some of them are very understandable (of course Xion and Namine have them because Kairi has and Roxas because of Ven), but there's still many: Xaldin, Aqua, Terra, Luxord ar least. And why Sora and Kairi's eyes are the same colour? At least Riku's eye colour is a bit lighter and Axel's and Saix's eyes are green. But I agree, there should be more characters with brown eyes.

I would think a lot of Japanese people, including the directors of our favourite games have a thing for a blue eyes because the dominant gene is Brown, meaning it's the most common, so baby blues are seen as more rare and idealized in that respect.  Same way a lot of Japanese guys bleach their beautiful shockingly pure black hair platinum.  It's not naturally there genetically as the brown gene is dominant, and most of them would have both dominant brown genes, so the chance of two brown eyed people mating and both carrying the recessive blue eyed gene and both recessive alleles passing on the offspring is unlikely.  Because it's rare it's cherished.

 

Also, in an art aspect, it is much easier to create colourful dimensional blue eyes as standard (and those palettes can just be swapped to any blue eyed character if they want to save time) with all the different shades you use.  Brown is harder to really give dimension to as easy, requires more work and more shades to look as dimensional.

Whoa, I've seriously never noticed any difference in them : O I need to look them closely now! But my sister is gonna love this, she hates the fact that Sora's and Kairi's eyes are the same colour : D

I mean it not just her even. There was this one girl I knew, short brown hair, pale skin but by god her blue eyes ALWAYS took my breath away and left me as a bumbling, awestricken, breathless idiot everytime I see her.I dunno, maybe I have an affinity with girls wih pale skin and blue eyes...
