  1. 1. What would make you buy an Xbox One?

    • A lower price: $500 is too steep.

    • Exclusive games.

    • Nothing. Microsoft has lost me as a consumer/I'm just not interested in what they're offering.

Don Mattrick: Microsoft is committed to Japan

"We're committed to Japan," the company's Don Mattrick told OXM and other journalists during a roundtable chat at its manufacturing labs, a couple of weeks before this Tuesday's Xbox One reveal. "We continue to build on our partnerships, we continue to build on our offerings for consumers inside of that space.

"We think it's an important market," he added. "And we'll continue building on the working investment that we've done over all these years." Any chance of another Lost Odyssey, Mattrick?

Pushed for more, the exec refused to be, erm, pushed. "Again, I'm not going to go in to details of the launch until we nuance with key partners and build a market strategy.

"This event is just to, kind of, kick off the big picture - there'll be more news in appropriate ways [for each geographical region], including the content partners, all classes of content, what's been tweaked and what's the same as what we're rolling out in the US."

"Microsoft Studios have already revealed that the Xbox Live Achievements will receive a makeover on the next-generation of Xbox Live, but aside from the fact that they can continually evolve over time nothing concrete had been stated.

Until now that is, as the hardware manufacturer has revealed that ‘achievements are no longer confined to a single game.’

Suggesting that the system may move to something resembling Ubisoft’s much lamented Uplay system, gamers can earn Achievements across all titles and experiences and monitor them via a new online portal that not only keeps track of what you earned, but how you earned it. Footage can be saved and uploaded for others to view, similarly to the PlayStation 4′s ‘Share’ function. Achievements can be earned in more ways than before as new ones can be added dynamically at any time. Further details on the future of the Xbox Live Achievements and their online portal will undoubtedly be revealed soon, and Electronic Theatre will of course keep you updated with all the latest details."

I'm so surprised many people were disappointed with their reveal. I'm a Sony guy, and I'm not going to lie, it's capabilities look promising. It's just from the gaming view, not much was talked about. But EVERYONE seems to dislike it. I honestly don't know why. It looks cool.

You do realize that the newer versions of the PS3 and the PS4 wont have backwards compatibly (but the PS4 will have Gaikai) and not just the Xbox One, right?

Yeah and that's also stupid.

The Wii was backward compatable with the GameCube

The original DS was backward compatable with the GBA

the 3DS is backward compatable with the DS

For God's sake the Wii U is backward compatable with the Wii for every Wii game, they even put the original Wii menu as an option to change the menu.

the newer version of Ps3 should've been compatable like the older ones so I don't know why the newer ones aren't.

I hope sony would fix it to a certain extent with the PS4 because obviously my Ps3 won't last forever and I have a TON of Ps3 games

Maybe there will be an official announcement that they wont have fees after all Microsoft said all the release info was just possible scenarios. Backwards compatibility though...they should have, though maybe theyll be like the PS3 and have digital downloads of games from their older systems.

The PS3 will be supported until the end of 2016 at least. I'd expect even longer though. Look at the PS2.

So...the Kinect can talk now apparently. And remote play.

Microsoft's day-long media outing for the Xbox One this week was only the first of a two-stage unveiling for the new console, and the E3 event won't be just about games.

Among the features not yet shown off for the console is the ability for gamers to have a friend take over gameplay remotely to help them through a difficult spot in a game and Kinect's ability to talk back to gamers.

The Xbox One's heavy reliance on the Kinect for voice commands will eventually include two-way conversations, according to two sources who tested out the still-in-development feature.

In one scenario, Kinect used its facial recognition to scan a room full of people and note if there was someone in the room it didn't recognize. It then told the console owner that there is someone in the room it didn't recognize and asked the new person to identify themselves. Once the person said their name, Kinect welcomed them and saved their information to the console.

Xbox One's ability to speak will allow it to function more like the iPhone's Siri, according to Microsoft officials who presented the feature. The voice may not be available at the console's launch, but if it isn't it will be added in a post launch patch within the first few months.

The Xbox One will also feature the ability to Skype a friend to ask them for help on a game and then allow them to take over gameplay. The feature is designed to allow players to help one another get through sections of a game when they're stuck.

In a demonstration of the feature, a source told us that a message popped up on their screen asking if it was OK if the player they were Skyping with could take over the game. Once the friend took over, the first player was able to watch them play the game. Either player could end the remote play with a button push.

While the feature is already fully functional, the details of its use aren't completely locked in yet. It's not clear, for instance, how long a person can remotely play or if they need to also own the game they are helping their friend play through.

While the demonstration our source saw used a local hardwired connection between consoles, Microsoft officials say they aren't worried about latency issues. It is also unclear what technology will be used to power the remote play.

Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 will also feature remote play. The service, powered by Gaikai, will allow players will to ask a friend over the internet to take over their game, should they find themselves in a rough spot in a game. Sony's service will also support streaming live gameplay video to friends and even a "director" mode for games, letting other players interact with your game by dropping you health, maps and other items over the internet.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment on these two unannounced Xbox One features and will update the story when they respond.

Update:
Major Nelson of Xbox live also confirms that trade in and used games will work on the Xbox One

Update #2:
The new buttons on the controller explained

Microsoft has explained the names and functionality of those mysterious new buttons on Xbox One’s controller where Start and Back appeared on Xbox 360. According to a Microsoft representative, these buttons are named “Menu” and View.”

“The Menu button (on the right) will bring up context-specific menus which game and app developers can design to enhance the user experience,” Microsoft told IGN. “The Menu button could be used in scenarios such as bringing up in-game menus, showing video playback options, and accessing commands on the console’s user interface.”

The View button, meanwhile, “will change views or provide more information in games and apps. The function of the View button will be driven by developers. Possible uses of the View button include viewing a map during a role playing game, displaying a leaderboard in a first person shooter, and enhancing the navigation of the console’s user interface.”

I've been reading around about the "Xbone". And the more I read, the more turned off I am about the console.

I'm not a console wartard. I'm not. I am more a Nintendo guy yes, but I own a PS2, PS3, and I plan to get a PS4. I've never played Xbox, since I wasn't really interested in it, but that never meant I hated it. I was indifferent about it.

But, eff me if they decide to implement all of those DRM methods. More specifically, that one where the Kinect counts how many people are in a room at the time and takes measures if it decides there are too many people are in a room.

That is just straight up greed and tyranny. Because of this, even if Microsoft releases an enticing exclusive, I will not even consider purchasing an Xbone until Microsoft gets its act together. I'm hoping many others are with me on this, because crap like that is unacceptable.

Microsoft can't even give straight answers about anything. No "yes" or "no", just a bunch of big words. They don't confirm nor deny these patents will be implemented.

I know Sony has that Playstation Eye thing. I hope they don't decide to jump on this bandwagon. If they do, well, it'll be a sad day.
