Without Kira or L, they wouldn't put their intelligence to their limits and, also, they wouldn't be in a epic battle between Light (L) and Darkness (Kira), not by strenght but by intelligence; which shows how powerful the Human mind actually is. Personally, I would have ALSO enjoyed seeing a World by Kira's ideals. A world where the only darkest darkness left was himself. In conclusion, I think Death Note is brilliant. I am truly a fan of it. (You can see the awesomness of the anime, in the gif below).
