I'm annoyed that I spent ages editing this so that it made sense visually and somehow I'm not allowed to post it like that. Any suggestions? Anyways, I posted it as a Microsoft Word document anyway.

 

This is an english translation that I made of the official Japanese Kingdom Hearts Novel Kingdom Hearts II Volume 1 Other Diamonds. If you havent read it it is a collection of 9 individual stories that ARE NOT featured in the video games. Most are written in the viewpoints of the characters to add some depths to their thoughts and feelings we see in the games. In this case: Riku. This is the final Episode of the novel. I haven't posted it on here but this episode kind of continues from the novels official Prologue which has been translated already and is available online.

When I close my eyes and try to sleep, I can hear the sounds.
Then the back of my eyelids is tainted in a deep blue, the blue sea and sky come into view.
I’m still ashore, looking at the sea and sky.
It’s a very important memory of mine - impossible to see, only in my dreams for now. I think it’s far away.

<”Riku”.>
<Sora comes running as usual over the sand. >
<”Riku, you’ve been lying around even though I took loads of effort to come all the way out to the island, you’re just sleeping!”>
<Sora pouts in frustration.>
<“It’s not a big deal anyway……”>
<Sora sits down on his knees.>
<“……Because you’ve been looking at the sea all the time recently Riku”.>
<From a little away, a shout of joy is heard from Selphie and Wakka.>
<“Whether you’re looking at something in particular out there or not, you know that nothing’s changed. It’s the same old sea”.>
<Sora tilts his head.>
<“What are you two doing together?”>
<Sora’s face broke into a smile.>
<It was Kairi.>
<“Thanks to him, nothing” Sora answered.>
<Kairi sat next to Sora.>
<“Well that’s just no fun”.>
<Kairi said to Sora.>
<“Well I think that looking at the sea is no good for you”>
<Sora’s pouts his mouth out even further.>
<“Hey, Riku. Can we do something else?”>
<Sora and I look back.>
<“Beach race! Again, just like we did the other day…… well?”>

If I kept losing in the same way that Sora does, would I never give up until I won?

<“All right!”>
<Sora jumped up.>
<“I’ll be the referee”.>
<Kairi says.>
<“If I win, I’m captain of the raft!”>
<Sora declares.>
<We are going to build a raft now.>

To go to the other side of the sea – to someplace else.

<“Riku, if you win—“>
<Sora tried to find the words.>
<At my suggestion, Sora stops moving.>
<“Wha? Wait a minute……”>
<Sora is worried.>

Two people that commit to eat the fruit together will be tied forever.

<“Are you ready? On my count!”>
<Kairi’s voice echoes along the beach.>
<“3,2,1…… GO!”>
<Sora appeared to choose a route running through the sand.>
<The wind on the sandy beach was desperate.>

<Sora seemed to be a little late.>

One day I may lose the race…

<Sora was still behind me.>
<He moved, jumping from rock to rock and finally touched the tree of the Paopu fruit.>
<And Kairi watched Sora.>

<Sora screamed and collapsed onto the sand.>
<Then he put on his sulky face.>

<In reply, Sora waved his hand.>
<“What were you two just talking about, huh?”>
<Kairi leant in slightly.>
<“Just that I didn’t lose!”>
<Sora shouted.>

<On the cliff tops.>
<The horizon over the ocean.>

I wasn’t supposed to lose to Sora.

I’m jealous of Sora.

I can’t become desperately weak, nor can I laugh it off like that.

Why must I be 1 year older?

If it wasn’t for Kairi – If I was left empty, alone without either of them. One thing remains for sure, I would be fine.

I dream enough of a world without Kairi, and a world without Sora. This world is cruel.

I wonder, is this wind coming from the sea?

Or is it wind from the sky?

The sea and sky in front of my eyes, the same as always. A world that doesn’t change forever.

The blue sea and sky burn the back of my eyelids.

I wanted to get out of that world that forever remains unchanged.

<“The Door will open soon”.>

<Suddenly I hear a voice from somewhere.>
<And the cry of sea birds and the sound of the waves.>

< “The Door will open soon”.>
That voice sounds so familiar.

It seems like—I know that voice.

“You probably realise that the darkness is inside of you?”

Ansems voice is – heard from the Darkness in my mind.

“Why don’t you give in to it?”
<“Forget Sora—and Kairi for a change”.>
<Darkness.>

The blue is not visible anymore.
I can no longer see my dear sea and sky.

“Riku!”
Someone calls my name and Sora apparently shakes my upper body vigorously awake.
“It seems like you’ve been having these nightmares a lot, Are you OK?”
The person in the black coat giving me the anxious looks wasn’t Sora. It was the king. King Mickey.
The moon above shone little light onto the grassland and the night air was cold and chilly. Everything comes flooding back to me.
“Oh, right. I’m real sorry Mickey for making you worry”.
I gave him an awkward smile.
I was just dreaming.
A dream of my dear home.
“It seems that Ansem is still corrupting your heart and mind Riku”.
“It seems so……”
I agree and look down.
But I knew that already, since I left that castle.
That Castle – I left Castle Oblivion already.
Yet every night, I’m still plagued by similar nightmares.
However different the dream begins, it always ends the same.
I hear the voice of Ansem that crops up.
Between light and darkness, the world of dreams, I wonder is it anything like the Darkness of Beteeen?
Like Ansem, I don’t know for certain if it is real, or manifests with the same intentions.
And the dream itself. Is Ansem still inside me? – he seems to know that the Darkness is still there. It makes me want to despair in the reality that I’m confronted by.
But as Mickey said:
A light can be found even from the deepest darkness.
“Can you sleep properly now?”
Mickey lowers his hood anxiously to look into my face.
“But of course”.
“Oh really?”
“Awful. Contrary to what I expected, it looks like you’re not giving me any credit or trust”.
I grinned and laughed in answer. As if lured by its infectiousness, Mickey shakes his head and laughs with a deep “whew” sigh.
“I expected you to say that since I can’t really help with your dreams, However! I had hoped that you trust me of course!”
“Don’t say that, I’m sorry Mickey”.
I slumped slightly.
“Eh? What’s to apologise for? In any case it’s not like anything bad has happened so why bother?”
Unfortunately, Mickeys words only succeed to made me more downcast.
It wasn’t a bad thing? REALLY?
‘Cause I considered a world without Kairi, and a world without Sora, for me.
And if they both knew that, it would really hurt them.
How is that seriously not my bad?

The Darkness inside of you has called to me.

A shiver passes over my shoulders at the sudden arrival of the voice.
Mickey hasn’t noticed.

We’re Darkness—We are the same – You are me.

I want to shout out and, but no. I will not cry.
I know that in my heart, there is darkness.
So I decided to let us live with the darkness.
I can’t lose myself in the darkness in my mind.
I mean I – couldn’t possibly erase Kairi and Sora.
Because my two friends are so important to me.
“Riku?”
“I didn’t say anything, Mickey. I think I’m gonna sleep a little more now”.
I gave him a stiff smile.
“You’re absolutely right”.
Mickey lies down beside me.

Follow me, Riku.

I can not afford to follow it. And I can’t stay to be near Mickey much longer either.
I can’t stand to worry him any more.
And if I stay near anyone for much longer, I was sure to fracture their heart.
I have to fight Ansem. Alone. In my mind.
All right.
I know.
Light will never abandon me.
The Light will reach even the deepest of my darkness.
And then again, I have my friends who are thinking of me.
So I will not lose.
Okay then.
I stare a little at Mickey who begins to breathe in a gentle rhythm of deep sleep.
“I’m sorry Mickey”.
I whisper softly and gently get up.

I will choose the path of Twilight – It’s the way to dawn…
I take my steps alone.
