What were your first thoughts about Kingdom Hearts back in 2002 before you actually played the game?

Recommended Posts

I can't really give my opinion, since i was a toddler back then, and by the time i heard about KH, everyone said it was amazing, so i looked forward to it.

But i know that many people thought Square was insane for making an RPG with Disney and FF characters, before the game actually came out. So i wanna know what you guys thought of the game before you actually played it and/ or heard reviews about it.

Long story, short, I thought it was the dumbest idea for a video game ever, I would totally bash on the game and the characters. Obviously my opinions changed though seeing as I'm here now :P After I actually picked up and played KH and then later KH2 when it came out I had to smack myself on the head a few times because I was totally wrong, and they actually turned out to be pretty good games.

I was about 8 and had an unhealthy obsession with Disney back in the day, so when I first heard about a game where you could run around with some of my favorite characters my 8 year-old self thought that Kingdom Hearts was one of the greatest things to ever be invented. Granted, my opinion has changed over time, but when I first got the game for Christmas the same year it was out, I ignored all other presents I had (if there was any, I can't recall) and ran to the back of the house and started playing it.

I thought it was a great idea man... Finally a Disney game that actually looked cool for once.

To be honest, I can hardly remember seeing Kingdom hearts since I was about 5 years old at that time. The only thing I remember is a picture from the comercial and the song 'Simple and Clean.' A few years later, when I heard the song again it refreshed my memory and it led me to Kingdom Hearts again. Its because of that song that I began to admire the game and its series.

(Who knew? :P )

Ahh yes.. My first look on Kingdom hearts! I have no idea how old I was but I was in 4th grade! I had just got done with Jak and Daxter so the idea of a nice beach and two of the things I saw most growing up was perfect. I remember being in the living room watching cartoon network when the commercial came on. Simple and clean started to play, Sora would speak, and everything just looked absolutely crazy. Just WHO was this boy who resembled Micky Mouse? Why was he unlucky enough to have goofy as his protector?! I literally remember the music luring me to the screen more as I watched all the colors, watching Mufasa's cloud form and seeing Simba step out and roar! I needed this game and lucky for my my sister worked at Block Buster.

The game came out and I begged and begged for my sister to rent the game for me since she got two free rentals a week. She exsplained that she couldn't rent any video games until they have been out for two weeks. Thows were the longest two weeks of my life. I remember going to Wal-mart and seeing the game set up to play and there was a huge line of people waiting to play it. I got in line and was so excited, They were on day two and I was watching two high schoolers laugh at the seen where Goofy was sleeping, and Donald Duck used Thunder to wake him up. After waiting through about 6 people's turns, I placed my hands on the controller. This was the moment I finally got to play the game! I took a deep breath and took in the sights. I was standing next to the raft, looking into a small cave with a mushroom sitting inside. And before I did as much as press the analog stick forward, my parents came around the corner and said I was time to go. I literally wanted to cry.

The opinions of the people around me were not as great. My best friend thought it was boring to look at, and another friend told me it was stupid and he wouldn't play it because it didn't look as good as Final Fantasy 10. Kinda funny because 10 doesn't hold up as well in my opinion after the years. They were finally forced to play it and to this day, they are some of the biggest KH fans I know! I remember getting made fun of at school! "Oh you play Kingdom hearts? Your stupid. All you do is run around with a key and talk to Disney characters!" Is what a kid named Travis and many others had said to me. I told them they wouldn't understand unless they played. Of coerce a week later they all came up asking me how to get passed certain points!

This is at least a few of my experiences when the game came out, haha.

Years after it came out I was at EB games and I was allowed to get 2 games. I seen KH and I decided it looked awesome so I was going to get that and Jak & Daxter. But then I seen a game I wanted for ages though keep in mind it was pre-owned. I (regretably) put KH back and got the other 2 games. And if it wasnt for this next thing i probably wouldnt have ever played KH. The pre-ownec game i bought didnt work... So i took it back the next day, and the guy told me I could have a cash refund or pick another game that was the same price, and yes, KH was the same price.

And yeah I fell in love with it and so on :)

I was in 4th grade when it came out too. (And your birthday is 2 days before mine on the same year, whoa. lol) I remember my friend talking to me about it after lunch, waiting to go out to recess. I thought it sounded pretty...interesting...All he said was you're a kid with a key as a weapon running around in Disney worlds. I was like, okaaayy...lol. I had forgotten about it for a while apparently, because two years later I saw KH at Walmart, which my grandma took me to, to pick out anything $20 and under. It was the 'greatest hits' version, and costed $20, so I was like huh, might as well see what this is all about. Then I got KH 2 when it came out about a year later.I was INSTANTLY hooked on for life. Haha
