Is FFVII overrated?

Idk if there's already a topic about this, but here goes. I hear so much butting heads over Final Fantasy VII. Like, half of the FF fanbase is like, "omaigozh it s teh best gaem evur!!!1!!!" and then the other half hates it because it's "overrated". And so I first played it a few years back, and I thought it was a fantastic game. And where I stand today, I stand by the opinion that it is a fantastic game. I personally liked IX better, but that's just my opinion. (note that I've played 1, 7, 7CC, 8, 9, 10, 12, DFF, DDFF).

 

So I guess what I want a discussion on here, is: Do you think Final Fantasy VII is truly overrated, or does it get hate because of its obnoxious fanbase?

 

Or is it still excellent, but still just oh-so-slightly overrated? 

 

Or is it just okay? 

 

I personally just think it's a great game with fun gameplay and good character development and an interesting story. What do you guys think?

In all seriousness, it's overrated, but not severely. It's great— I love it, but I don't see it as the best. That may just be me, because I-VI are my favorites. I prefer those much more, respectively with their pro's and con's. No game is perfect though.

I think FFIV is a great, fun game... but it is over rated. I have to disagree about it being the BEST FF GAME, but it's high on my list. I, personally, like IX much more.

I love how success automatically means a game is overrated. It's a great game, and it has it's pros and cons like any other game. It just happens to be widely praised for what it did at the time, which is introducing JRPG's to america.

 

and a side note, Crisis Core is a fantastic game

jump 1 and 2, III on DS gorgeous.. not the best story but meh... the gameplay and music are good enough. IV is IV. V..... I have no comments... Exdeath... I´m trying to like him as a villain but... and VI VI!!!! is the legendary one... , now about VII... Aerith, chocobos, highwind, materia, what else you can ask for... Anyway the best one in my preferences is VI followed by IX so yeah just a bit.

jump 1 and 2, III on DS gorgeous.. not the best story but meh... the gameplay and music are good enough. IV is IV. V..... I have no comments... Exdeath... I´m trying to like him as a villain but... and VI VI!!!! is the legendary one...

I keep trying to start VI, but for one reason or another, I keep forgetting about it. One day, I'll beat it though

I haven't gotten around to playing a lot of the FFs, and I've finished even less of them.  At the moment, I don't have much of an opinion on FFVII as I haven't finished it before.  FFX is my favorite at the moment, probably some sort of bias to the fact that it was the first FF I played

VII is sort of hit and miss for me, to be honest. I certainly don't think it's bad; there's a great many things that the game has going for it (in all honesty, I'm a big fan of Sephiroth's mother complex, in spite of all the flak he catches for it). I also don't think it's fair to say it's "over-rated." People like what they like, and it just happens that a lot of people liked it. For me personally, the problem was the middle of the game. I was really into it throughout the first act in Midgar, but after the party leaves the city, the story really feels like its lagging for a very long time. Also, a lot of the plot points felt like filler, rather than being necessary to the story (the segue into the amusement park, the parade for Shinra, launching the rocket, etc.). Also, a lot of the characters don't feel like they really need to be there, and are only included to justify the drawings Nomura did. Again, just my opinion.

 

In summary: VII's not one of my top favorites, but I don't think its over-rated.

The problem is that people overglorify this game as "THE BEST RPG GAME EVER MADE" and "THE BEST FF GAME,PERIOD" and if you oppose this opinion they'll piss on your opinion with the most fanboyish way possible

 

There are a lot of games that are much much better than FFVII,like FF6 and FF9  and even Chrono Trigger .....etc

 

 

The only reason people over-glorify FF7 it's because it's the first 3D Final Fantasy game in the series,but it's not the first 3D RPG(Panzer Dragoon on Sega Saturn came before FF7)

FFVII Is a good game. From what ive seen, it has a good story, good Battle System, and fun Side Quests. All the things a good JRPG should have. But its not the best. It is Definitely overrated. The fact that there are probably millions of FFVII Fanboys are proof of that. I have a friend who is one.

 

I recommended him to Play XIII, but he wont play it because IT DOESN'T HAVE CLOUD IN IT. <_< That and the fact that he says the game plays itself with Auto Battle, even though its extremely useful when you're pressed for time.

 

I like VII, but its definitely not the best and is overrated. Crisis Core however is much better in most things except Story which it rivals with the original VII. Its my second favorite next to XIII-2(But thats a bit biased for me, since its the first FF ive ever played really.

It is definitely a fan favorite. I don't really consider it overrated though. I think X also gets a good amount of credit, not as much as 7 but still good. If it's overrated or not that wouldn't affect the game though because it is definitely good. It's just some of the fanbase will be like "OH THIS FF ISNT AS GOOD AS FF7 IAJFIOAJI". Other than that it doesn't really matter.

Hm, do I think it's overrated?  That depends on the definition of overrated, though I tend to think no, it's not overrated.  Everyone will have their own opinion on which Final Fantasy was the best depending on what appealed to their personal tastes.  While I really liked Final Fantasy VII, I cannot say it was my favorite, though I still don't think it's overrated.  It's an excellent game with a very large fan-base, and I think it's receiving all of the love it deserves.  Like every game, Final Fantasy VII wasn't perfect by any means; it had its pros and cons.  But I do think it was a very good game.
