Jiraiya's Disciple 631 Posted April 22, 2013 ALBANY, New York (Reuters) - An Albany, New York high school English teacher who asked students to imagine they were Nazis and give reasons why Jews were evil may be disciplined, a school district spokesman said on Friday. Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard was expected to personally apologize on Friday to families of Albany High School students who were given the writing assignment, said Ron Lesko, a spokesman for the district. Saber Lily 1,543 Posted April 22, 2013 Wow. That's just...sick. Really sick. Which brings me to why that assignment was plain wrong. Twice I was heard the story of a WWII veteran. he was the father of a friend of my stepmom's. The man passed away six months ago. Twice, I heard how he liberated a major concentration camp, I believe Dachau. First into the camp, ahead of the main forces, this man gunned downed the Nazis on the walls. The prisoners were so emotionally destroyed, they didn't even know they were freed. That atrocity should never be remembered like that. Never. That teacher not only should be ashamed of what they have done, but be fired. The 1/3rd of the students who refused to do the assignment, I say good on them. While this atrocity must be remembered, so it can never be repeated, this is not the way. This was more then an offensive assignment. It was an insult to men like those who liberated the camps, and fought to ensure America did not end up like them. 2 TheApprenticeofKingMickey and starlol9 reacted to this

griann 59 Posted April 22, 2013 What the- ? I'm actually really confused why the other 2/3 did the assignment. I mean, it only says that 1/3 refused to do it, if I understood correctly. I'm really shocked. I'm just speechless. Being german we did learn all of that what happened but we didn't do any strange and offensive assignments like that. Unfortunately there are still some people who think that that what happened back then was really great, they called Neo-Nazis here. And the government here is trying to figure out how to stop them for good. Why would you give that kind of assignment? Seriously!

Shana09 5,769 Posted April 22, 2013 (edited) Well the message wasn't awful nor was the assignment. If the message was to show the Nazi side and explain why the Nazi's acted this way towards the Jews, then this would have been effective if they discussed about it rather than type up an essay about it. An essay about it was just a poor choice of an assignment. I rather come up ways to explain the Nazi's perspective than do an entire essay. But even then I really don't see the big deal unless I'm really missing something... If the message was "Hate on Jews" then I understand the frustration. It was an insult to men like those who liberated the camps, and fought to ensure America did not end up like them. I remember reading a book in French class, about a Canadian nun who was imprisoned in a concentration camp for the entire duration of the war simply because she was Canadian and Canada was part of the Alliance. The Russians had apparently liberated them and they were so used to the brutal routine the Nazis imposed on them that they stayed there for several more weeks until the French came to bring all the women to recovery centres and hospitals. And even then, they just thought they were being brought to a different camp. It just shows the terrible effect dehumanization can have on a person's psyche. KingdomHearts3 2,591 Posted May 5, 2013 Everyone needs to leave Jews alone! I am tired of them being the scapegoat for almost everything! Christians were persecuted during the Roman Empire and Jews have been persecuted since slavery in Egypt to the Nazi regime in Germany. Even today some people have scapegoated both Christians and Jews for anything! I am tired of it! Most religions been persecuted, but let's remember that Christianity pretty much took away the Native American culture and is the dominant religion in the U.S. today while every other religion is seen as ~exotic~ or ~weird~ or ~extremist~ and people of religions other than Christian are often subject to more criticism. While Christians were persecuted in the PAST, pretty much every other religion is attacked in the PRESENT to a great extent. Just Food For Thought. This assignment was very uncalled for and while the teacher may have been trying to make the students see the Nazi side, they failed to realize that some may have been Jewish themselves or known someone Jewish and it could've made them extremely uncomfortable and that's not okay! Don't teach them why the Nazi's may have thought this way because some children are very impressionable and may stick with those thoughts. It was poor teaching on the teacher's part. 2 Jilly Shears and Ivan reacted to this

Reyn 1,755 Posted May 7, 2013 O_O My god. *Facepalm* WF IS WRONG WITH THT GUY?? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS RETARDS PROBLEM? Its the JEW'S FAULT? ARE YOU SHITTING ME? HOW IS IT THEIR FAULT THEY WERE KIDNAPPED AND TORTURED IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS, AND HAD 1/3 OF THEIR POPULATION KILLED? WTF??????????????????????????????? :x :x I could understand if he asked why the Nazi's were evil, but even then, they had a reason. They were in the Great Depression, and were very desperate, so they believe that Hitler could help them rebuild their race's supremecy. But saying that the JEWS ARE EVIL? God, this just goes to show how racist and dickish people can be. An event like the holocaust should NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER BE INVOKED LIKE THAT. <_< I agree with Weiss, little by little, i find myself losing more faith in humanity. Thank God for those of us who are still good in the world.
