Seems to fast, feels like it's turning into the COD of open world lol But it does look interesting, the PS4 version will probably be the better out of the 4 versions though

yea i guess, but i  think they should've released the game from chronological order, u know, like altier, ezio, conner, then put someone in the near future, but not as close as the present. but i think if they do that, the series would get boring cuz we have desmond there.

Small update:

The game is apparently going to feature no loading transitions, in the next gen or current gen versions of the game. This is pretty great and will allow for seamless play of the game.

Another update: 
In next gen versions of Assassin's Creed IV single player mode will require internet connection for what Creative director Jean Guesdon "A solo experience that benefits the presence of a huge community." This will not affect current gen console versions and may or may not affect the Wii u console version.

Update:

More new details have been revealed for AC: Black Flag. These include the following:

  • The game will take place in the late 17th, early 18th century
  • As we've seen a bit with the jungle screenshots there are new enviornmets and they will be catered to different types of gameplay. For example the mine ruins will be more about navigation puzzles while the plantation and the jungles are much more dense and stealth driven environments
  • There will be 50 unique, seamless locations
  • Edward's pirate/Assassin mix allows for a lot of new gameplay mechanics such as dual wielding swords or using 4 guns at once and comboing between them (holy dayum) 
  • For the PS4 version it has been confirmed they will be supporting the controller and it's unique functions.

Small updates:

Ubisoft will be giving theater a presentation at PAX east panel for AC IV: Black flag. During the exclusive look at Black Flag, attendees will be introduced to the game's hero and recive a special edition AC IV: Black flag inflatable sword.

Small update:

Ubisoft is going to (thankfully) stay away from pirate cliches (parrots, hooks, peg legs etc.) for AC IV and in their words

 

And that allows us to redefine piracy in entertainment. No longer is it for kids.

An interesting bit of info is that the game was actually teased in this scene in ACIII

 

Also it seems that all versions of the game will be released simulateously or in Guesdon's words "same ship".

Hey guys, I just received the latest issue of Game Informer Magazine, and I read this article about Assassin’s Creed IV and I found it very interesting.  The article was written by Bryan Vore, and I’m going to paraphrase the article into my own words.  So I hope you guys enjoy this topic. ^_^
 
UNCHARTED WATERS
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Since the inception of Assassin’s Creed in 2007, the series has followed a pattern and a set of established ground rules.  Players would take control of a character named Desmond Miles, who was in the middle of the conflict of Assassins and Templars, a conflict he wanted no part of and had tried to avoid during his life.  But through the games, he would relive the memories of his ancestors via the Animus, to help the Assassin’s cause.  With each game, a new ancestor was discovered, and the plot unraveled deeper and deeper.  But now his story has ended, and with that, many of Assassin’s Creed’s conventions.
 
After three games chronicling the life of the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore Da Firenze, Assassin’s Creed III signaled an incredible shift with a new era and hero, an era in which we knew the story would lead up to.  With this fourth installment, big changes are occurring again, and instead of continuing Connor’s story, the franchise is shifting back to the days of his grandfather Edward Kenway.  Players will control this swashbuckling pirate as he is immersed into the conflict of the Assassin’s and Templars.  In addition to new locales in the Caribbean, the ship battles will take a more significant role in this game, a feature which was praised in Assassin’s Creed III.
 
THE REAL PIRATES
 
The development of Black Flag began back in September 2011, when the ship combat was conceptualized for Assassin’s Creed 3.  The Black Flag members decided that they could make a core concept of an entire game with these mechanics.  Scriptwriter Darby McDevitt said that while they were doing the father-son story of Haytham and Connor in Assassin’s Creed III, they realized that if they went back in time a few decades, they would be right in the golden age of piracy.  And so, that is how Edward Kenway came into being.
 
The father of Haytham and the grandfather of Connor, Edward grew up poor in Britain and married at a young age.  When class and family issues came between the couple, he set out to the West Indies to seek fortune and make a name for himself.  He served as a privateer for a while, but once the monarchies of England, Spain, France and others signed a series of treaties around 1713, the contracts dried up.  And so, Edward and the rest of the now struggling privateers began working for themselves as pirates, raiding ships and hauling in loot  throughout a ten-year span when pirates ruled the Caribbean.
 
As well all know, Assassin’s Creed is known for placing their characters in historical periods of time, and this installment is no exception.  Between 1715 and 1725, pirates like Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold and Anne Bonny became legends.  In Black Flag, Edward will cross paths with these characters during his adventures.  One thing that the developers commented on was that they aren’t going to add any cartoonish style things such as talking parrots, or things associated with Pirates of the Caribbean.  They are already satisfied with how the real stuff is amazing as it is, and they say that they don’t need to add any fake stuff.
 
The developers are using more grounded entertainment as inspiration.  They say that movies like The Mission and Master and Commander or TV shows like Deadwood, though not directly connected to pirates, nails the tone the writers are targeting.  On the gaming side, this is the Red Dead Redemption equivalent of pirates.  But Black Flag is not just a pirate game.  Edward is immersed in the swashbuckling lifestyle, but soon comes into contact with the Assassins and Templars.  In this concept, we see a more extreme side of the Assassin’s side with Edward, and the game explores the struggle he has to reconcile his selfish, cavalier pirate attitude with the two competing higher ideals.
 
MULTIPLAYER
 
Although Ubisoft hasn’t offered any specifics, it confirmed that competitive multiplayer is returning.  Ashraf Ismail describes it as a pirate fantasy for all.  They’ll include new characters, new maps, and new game modes.  And there might be a possibility that ship to ship battles will be included in multiplayer, since it’s an essential part of single player, but for now all we can do is wait for confirmation on this.
 
NAVAL WARFARE
 
Ubisoft describes Black Flag as the first true naval open-world game.  While ACIII had linear, contained scripted missions at sea, Black Flag will feature a massive ocean that connects 50 unique land locations in the Caribbean.  That’ll present plenty of new places to explore, and many new gameplay mechanics could be introduced.  Black Flag will also have lots for the player to do to keep them busy, such as when at Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw, he can pull a spyglass and observe the horizon for any points of interests such as an uncharted island.  Onscreen, players see a list of grayed out items, only displaying the basic details once you dock at the landmass for the first time.  These locations include hidden coves, fishing villages, jungles, Mayan ruins, plantations, and large cities like Kingston, Havana and Nassau.  Ashraf Ismail says that it’s very important that the game feels united, and that players don’t feel that all these locations are separate maps that you have to load into, but rather, one whole world in which the player can be immersed.  And so with that being said, you can sail to any island, get out, and explore it without any loading breaks, although traditional large cities will still need to load.  You can even jump off the boat and go for a swim. You can even go underwater and experience these new exploration segments.  Using a diving bell, which is a large metal structure that holds air in its cavity as it submerges, the diver can descend into the depths of the ocean, swim out to nab treasure, and return for a fresh gasp of air without needing to head to the surface.  Edward can go underwater and search ship wrecks for treasure and hidden secrets while trying not to get eaten by sharks and other sea creatures. 
 
One of the greatest dangers and opportunities of the open seas is the variety of ships you may encounter. And also, another interesting thing is that your spyglass can reveal what kind of cargo is onboard and what defenses a ship has.  You can choose to ignore these ships, or assault them and claim the loot as your own. 
 
Ubisoft wouldn’t go into details about the naval combat, but stressed that boarding has received an overhaul.  Instead of a repetitive boarding scene like in ACIII, you can choose any tactic you wish.  Edward can fight his opponents with ranged or melee attacks, or you could choose to jump into the water and sneakily make your way towards the enemy ship, and assassinate the ship’s captain.  But be sure to keep an eye out for patrolling military ships before raiding.  These well equipped craft rush to fight off any marauders.
 
In terms of combat, Edward draws from the traditional Assassin’s playbook, wielding dual hidden blades, swords and pistols.  This long range option is now free aim, so you have more control over who you are targeting.  Edward carries four pistols with him at all times, and he’s the first Assassin to double up on swords.  Also, as in other AC games in which you upgraded the Villa Auditore or the homestead, ACIV will allow you to upgrade your ship, the Jackdaw, and you can make, offensive, defensive, and navigation improvements to the ship.
 
THE FATE OF EDWARD KENWAY
 
Unless you keep up regularly on video game novelizations, you may not have realized that the hero of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has already appeared in a book released last December.  The book, titled Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken, is the story of Connor’s father, Haytham, spanning back to his early days as a young boy in London.  Long-retired Edward trains Haytham in the ways of combat in the early part of the book, though his pirate Assassin past is veiled in secrecy.  To learn more about Edward’s later years and Haytham’s turn to the Templars, read the book.
 
PRESENT DAY
 
As with all Assassin’s Creed games, Black Flag will also feature a story in the present day, but with a drastic change.  Remember the fact that Desmond’s saga ended in ACIII, and so this time, you are playing as yourself in this world.  The player takes on the role of an Abstergo Entertainment analyst who’s digging into the life of Edward Kenway using an Animus.  Since you’re not part of Desmond’s family line, fans may raise an eyebrow at the fact that a non-relative can experience the memories of another.  Ubisoft assures there are story foundations for this teased in ACIII.  The most likely scenario would seem to be tied to Desmond’s conversation with his father, William, late in the game after the old man is rescued from Abstergo.  When Desmond asks if the Templars got to him, William replies that he was able to resist, but it may not have been enough.  “I know they’ve been working on ways to extract memories and let others sift through those memories,” he says.  “Maybe they’re even analyzing mine right now.”  
 
This turns out to be true, because after the end credits, you control Connor with someone other than Desmond.  Then an unknown voice guides you to find pivots within the Animus.  Once you’re successful, the voice celebrates and says: “Holy crap.  We did it.  It’s done.  His data’s uploading to the cloud.  Vegas baby!  Vegas!”  The player’s real-life gamertag is then shown to be “synchronized with the cloud.”  Is this William Miles’ data?  Is the voice on the line an employee of Abstergo Entertainment?   This wouldn’t be the first time you control an Abstergo employee, since in Revelation’s multiplayer you could see how you climbed the ranks of the Templars, and ACIII: Liberation, was a product of Abstergo.  Now it remains to be seen how the story will work out, and what possible things Black Flag will hold for the future of the series.
 
LEARNING FROM PAST MISTAKES
 
ACIII suffered problems with bugs and glitches, but Ubisoft promises to do better this time with Black Flag to ensure the game has no glitches.  And what about the notoriously lengthy introduction sequences before the full game is opened up?  Ubisoft confirms that the game will start with a bang, and that they want to make sure that the pirate theme is thrown to the player’s face early on.  It doesn’t happen right away, but pretty quickly into the game the world opens up.  At that point, you’re free to do as you please.  Fast-travel locations were a pain to unlock in the cities of Boston and New York, and were easy to miss in the frontier.  For Black Flag, Ubisoft is taking a straightforward approach.  All you have to do is visit the location and you can instantly teleport there whenever you like.  This will be especially useful in the vast ocean world.

I personally am not looking forward to AC4. seem like they are basically pushing each numbered sequal like its call of duty( every year). plus they feel to me like the story isnt as interesting as it was in AC 2 or AC BH. plus, how can they go into the past and make that a sequal ? :/

An interview with Jean Guesdon about AC: IV

 

Given the scale of Ubisoft's investment with Assassin's Creed 3, were you never tempted to develop Brotherhood-style spin-offs before releasing the next numbered game?

 

We knew very early on that we wanted to tell the Kenway family saga. Assassin's Creed 3 went in-depth into Haytham and Connor's lives, and the book, Forsaken, which features Edward, was being written around the time when we started our project. So right off the bat, we knew we would have a new hero and, naturally, a brand new setting.

But when it comes to that number... very early on in the project, when we started to realize the scope, the freshness and innovation of what we had with the piracy setting, we knew it was going to be a whole different beast. With the way the world is built, all the new mechanics tied to sailing and exploring the Caribbean, on top of the brand new character, there is completely different from AC3. And to us, that's what it takes to make the leap to a new numbered game.

Will Black Flag have a slow narrative build-up, like Assassin's Creed 3? Or will we be able to explore and experiment with all the tools straight away?

For us, it all comes down to the fact that this game takes place in a pirate setting. Should a pirate-set game start off with a bang? Yes, it should... so we are making sure our game puts you right in the middle of the action from the get go. Should a Pirate-set game allow you to explore the whole world it offers, to feel like a true pirate sailing the Caribbean seas? Yes, it should. So we are definitely structuring the main path in order to make it possible to give the tools and the world to the player fairly early on in the game.

How has combat changed in Black Flag? Do the new weapons really alter things like combos, counters and streaks?

 

The same fundamental Assassin's Creed combat is still there - we are not making any changes to the combat system per se, but we are adding ingredients to it that will definitely change the dynamics. As you may have noticed, Edward can carry up to four pistols. Each one of these pistols can be quick-fired mid-combo to dispatch up to four enemies. We have also added free-aiming for all the firearms, a first for the franchise.

So for example, during a boarding sequence, where space is limited, you have to use these new ingredients or else you will get mowed down - trying to pick off some enemies using free-aim while your crew members are throwing the hooks, using quick-fire to clear some space on the deck. And of course, we are adding more ingredients that we we will go into detail about later.

How interactive and distinctive are the Jackdaw's crew - can you customise individual men, or are they handled as a group? Will they ever accompany you on land-based missions, like Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's recruits?

 

They are definitely vital to the experience - a captain cannot sail without a crew - but we can't tell you everything just yet.

What defines Edward Kenway as a character? What makes him stand apart from Ezio, Altair and Connor?

Previous assassins have always been driven by a sense of duty or revenge, or sometimes even both. Edward's motivations are purely selfish: he fights for glory. He has the skills of an Assassin, but he doesn't use them for the Creed. He is, at heart, a pirate. And he's not a "good" pirate like you see in children's tales - he is a criminal with a taste for infamy.

Couple that with the fact that he is trained by the Assassins, and you can see that there is a lot to explore here. How does a criminal, who is only looking out for himself, reconcile these two different philosophies? The clash between these two ideologies within Edward is one of the most exciting things about him.

Many people feel that Far Cry 3 is an Assassin's Creed game in first-person. Have you taken inspiration from that series at all?

We're really proud of the Far Cry team, and we are fans of the game they have created. There are some systems in FC3 that were really well implemented, and we are definitely looking at these to see how they could be adapted for our open world.

You're styling the online modes as a service provided by "Abstergo Entertainment", which feels like a fun satire of the manufacturing and games publishing business, particularly with next generation consoles just round the corner. Can you talk me through how that idea came up, and how far you'll go with it?

Abstergo Entertainment was actually created for Assassin's Creed 3's multiplayer and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation. When you boot those games, the Abstergo Entertainment logo comes up as part of the boot sequence - those two games are products of Abstergo.

A company as far-reaching as Abstergo would need a public face, of course, so it was natural for us to think of how they could apply the Animus technology and research into a consumer application. The commercialization of an Animus device means enabling people to live experiences that they otherwise wouldn't - you can see it's easy to draw parallels between that and what we are doing ourselves.

And in terms of how far we will go with it? You will have to play the game to find out.

Assassin's Creed 3 gave us some fun, original DLC ideas - the Tyranny of King Washington is a welcome change of tone. Will you do something similar for Black Flag?

 

We really like what the Quebec team has achieved with the AC3 DLC - it gives a whole new meaning to "history is our playground". As far as our own DLC goes, it's a bit too early to talk about that.

Have you had to upgrade the Anvil Engine much for Black Flag?

Of course. AnvilNext is an extremely powerful and versatile engine, so we were definitely grateful to be able to use it as a starting point. The new setting and the structure of our open world come with their own set of requirements that we had to build into AnvilNext. For example, in AC3 the naval and land gameplay were completely separate - almost like two different games put together. You load from one into the other as you select the naval missions.

 

We've talked about the seamlessness of Black Flag - to enable this, we had to modify the engine to join these two gameplay components together, to enable the AC land gameplay to run at the same time as the naval gameplay, so that you can sail anywhere, and leave the wheel to jump in the water to go explore an island, or to board a ship by using free-running.

Of course, since we are coming out on next gen platforms, we are also modifying the engine to get the most out of the increased power that they bring to the table. These are just two examples of the long list of upgrades that we are making to the engine.

Are you worried that players are getting weary of playing a new Assassin's Creed game every year?

I think we have proven that this franchise is relevant, and that it has a long way to go. Our job as developers of this new opus is to surprise players and bringing fresh, different ideas, while at the same time ensuring that what makes AC such a standout franchise remains intact.

 

With the scale and scope of the world we are building, the completely new setting, the new gameplay mechanics, and our new characters (both our hero and his supporting cast), we are definitely on track to get the job done and avoid fatigue altogether.

Are you worried about competition from next gen open world games like Ubisoft's own Watch_Dogs? And what about GTA 5?

We are actually really excited to play those games - both of their universes offer something fresh and different! But when it comes to what we're doing, we believe our promise and setting are very different from both of those games.

Been playing some AC4 these last few days and so far I'm loving the experience. The Pirate theme really suits the series, plus the environment is gorgeous! :)
