Sony employees have acknowledged a campaign aimed at convincing the company not to restrict used PlayStation 4 games.

The issue of limiting second hand game sales was reignited last week when Microsoft mentioned plans to regulate their use on Xbox One. Then, over the weekend, GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley hinted that Sony may still potentially follow suit.

"Microsoft is getting beaten up a lot on it," Keighley explained. "Sony, I think, has been seen as this kind of white knight so far that's not going to restrict used games. Based on some of the things I'm hearing, I don't think that's entirely true, because I can't see publishers allowing one system to do one thing and one do another."

In response to this latest uncertainty,NeoGAF users began circulating the #PS4NoDRM and #PS4USEDGAMES hashtags on Twitter yesterday and targeted messages at high profile Sony employees.Indeed, EA recently cancelled its Online Pass solution, designed as a way of recouping costs from second hand game sales. EA didn't mention only culling the scheme from Xbox One, where a used game tax appears likely.

"This is why I love PlayStation fans - the passion bucket overflows," Sony's head of hardware marketing John Koller wrote in response to the campaign.

"Humbled by the outpouring of passionate PlayStation fans and their willingness to talk to us directly," said SCEA producer Nick Accordino. "Please know that we hear you. <3"

"I love passionate #PlayStation Fans!!", Sony Worldwide Studios product boss Scott Rohdeadded.

Sony has yet to mention the campaign officially, however, and there's been no word from its top target - Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

"Used games can play on PS4," Yoshida told Eurogamer in February, back at the PlayStation 4 unveiling.

But Sony's position on the matter has become less clear in the wake of Microsoft'sconfused attempts to explain the issue. Used games can play on Xbox One, too, although with restrictions.

"The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox," Hyrbwrote over the weekend. "Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future."Microsoft exec Phil Harrison went out of his way to try and clarify game ownership and second-hand sales queries with Eurogamer at the Xbox One announcement event last week, but subsequent updates from Microsoft mouthpiece Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb have only made the company look like it still hasn't made up its mind.

An open letter to Sony, penned by one NeoGAF user, explains the fan campaign in more detail.

"You might be wondering what the above hashtags really mean," the letter states. "Simply put, they are requesting you to keep things on PS4 as they are on PS3, when it comes to physical disc rights and second hand discs.

"Microsoft has ignited a firestorm in announcing a strategy for Xbox One that would see consumers unable to lend a disc to friends, unable to privately sell or swap a disc, and only able to trade discs at pre-approved retail [stores].

"We believe this is a big mistake, and we'd like you not to share in it."

God, I hope Sony doesn't pull the same shit as Microsoft.  That would really turn me off to console gaming.

Sony has asked developers to include Remote Play functionality for all PlayStation 4 games, excluding titles that will require the use of the console's stereoscopic camera, the PS4 Eye. Expect PS Vita to play almost every single PS4 game via remote play.

“Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it’s first and foremost a video game console”. However, driving the video game message appears to be the biggest part of Sony’s next-gen strategy. ”The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers,” he said. “If we miss that part, I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3.

Way to go Kaz and Sony, that's what we want to hear

Time for Sony to win a console war before it's even begun. It'll be the fourth straight console war won by Sony.

I don't know... The 360 didn't do bad. It had Sony way out played the first few years of the it's life. Only within the past year really that Sony began to start to overtake it. I'd say honestly, the 360 won that battle.

The 360 used HD DVDs. The PS3 used Blu-ray Disc. Blu-ray defeated HD DVD in the format war. The PS3 is still going strong when the 360 isn't. The 360 sold like shit in Japan. The only country where the 360 sold great was the U.S.

Think about what you just said. Of course Sony's Ps3 sold better in Japan. Sony is Japan. Microsoft is an American company, so the same logic (Possibly) applies. The Ps3 JUST passed Xbox 360 sales in December, and was only up about one million as of January 10th. In Japan, I think they would prefer a Ps3 over an Xbox 360 just because it's Sony and has a Japan origin, I don't know for sure... In America, we hardly make any of our own shit so that doesn't matter. I know for one, as much as I love Sony, Microsoft had better support, online speed, and as far as i'm concerned, exclusives. Ps3's online is free, I know, which could also tie into it's sales. A console war in my eyes is the amount of quality the product brings you, and I believe the Xbox 360 had better quality than the Ps3. The Blu Ray thing... Everyone hates the Xbox One for NOT focusing on gaming (So far)... I mean, most of us here can agree you buy a console for your gaming needs, not to watch a Blu Ray movie... I've never even seen a Blu Ray movie, and i'm just fine. Edited by JJForever

No, it's not about watching a movie or TV show on Blu-ray. It's the disc format the games use. Blu-ray Discs are far superior to HD DVDs. Blu-ray Discs can fit a ton more than HD DVDs, plus they're more durable. PS3 games are usually better quality than that of 360 games. Just look at Final Fantasy XIII. PlayStation 3 has better exclusives. Square Enix prefer the PlayStation 3.

Oh. Should have read that through. Yeah that's true... It's annoying how a lot of the 360 games come with two discs instead of one like the Ps3, but still, same price for the same content. I've honestly haven't noticed changes as far as the LOOK of the games go on each console, but I don't know. Useless to argue about dying consoles anyways right? The future is upon us...

I'm sorry I said that you had no good looking games. I'm sorry I said I wouldn't get you. Nomura's proven me wrong. And I'm sorry I said you sounded like crap, Versus XIII. Or should I say, XV. After I get my Wii U, I'll get the PS4. After all, by that time, XV and KHIII should be coming out soon.

Dat $400 price tag.

The official price tag for the Playstation 4 is $399. The official price for the Xbox One is $499. I think we have a winner here. With FF15 and KH3, I would say that Sony has officially won E3. And no, Nintendo can't win.
