7 Colors in the rainbow?

Recommended Posts

I don't know about you, but when I was a kid, I was taught that the rainbow had six colors: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.  Then when I went to school or where ever it was the purple became indigo and violet.  I was like "where did this indigo violet thing come from?"  When you think about it, it's really stupid.  I mean violet is just a shade of purple, and indigo is mix of blue and purple.  So if indigo is in the rainbow, why isn't cyan in the rainbow, or yellow-orange?

I was taught Red, Orangle, Yellow, Green, Indigo and Violet (Richard of York gave battle in vain) in school since I was in Primary.

That's all you have to remember for tests, but visible light contains a spectrum of 1 million different colours, including the ones you've mentioned.

There's actually a lot more than that, to many to count. But 7 apparently is the traditional idea of a rainbow, but I was told 6

Well it's believe that Indigo actually refers to the color we now call blue, while Blue referred to Cyan. Newton was one of the first who tried to separate the cclors out by name, hence he's the one who saw Indigo as being dark blue, and blue as being light blue (Cyan). I like to think of it as seven, it's so much easier.

Actually, it really just depends on what culture you come from which becomes reflected in the language.  The rainbow can be broken down to have way more colors than any language has words for.  In English, we are primarily taught there are six because that's how our culture views the rainbow.  But this varies.  In Russia, they have two words different words for blue (to distinguish between light blue and dark blue).  There is even a language that has only two words for color, which makes labeling paint colors an interesting challenge.  So, in the end, it's just a cultural things and has nothing to do with how many colors there really are in a rainbow.  It would be better to measure how many light wave frequencies are emitted in a rainbow.
