Only buy from the best brands. So Dell, Toshiba and Asus. Windows 7 Home Premium or higher for your OS. Windows 8 is the best Windows OS ever. You're going to want 4 GB for RAM.

Is this your first PC? Do you already have Keyboard+mouse+speaker+monitor? Will you be using Nvidia or AMD?

If you're really gaming, an intel i3 won't really do good for you after 1-2 years since modern games tend to be more CPU heavy later on (ex. Far Cry 3 & Crysis 3).

If you don't mind having playing games in 1920X1080 and below 60fps, then either DreamDropStorm or my build recommendations is good enough for you.

Core i5 3470
Asus P8Z77-M motherboard
Kingston 4GB DDR3-1333 x2
Sapphire HD7850 1GB DDR5
WD Blue 500GB hard disk
Liteon DVD writer
FSP Hexa 500W power supply
Coolermaster Elite 431/Aerocool VS4 casing
Additional 12cm fan

Total around - $600

This build should last you for at least 2-3 years. If you feel like an upgrade later on, you can get a stronger GPU and add an SSD for faster boot up.

The total price depends on where you live though. =/

I wouldn't really suggest Dell for a gaming computer. Alienwares are overpriced, often come broken, and have the worst costumer support in the industry. Also, while I really like Windows 8, it has been a NIGHTMARE for game developers. Gabe Newell, founder and CEO of Valve regularly bashes the OS.

Anyway back on topic...

For 500 dollars getting a true gaming computer is difficult. You will be able to get something that can run most of the games out right now and coming up at a decent setting, but you will have trouble in two or three years time. I'd suggest saving up for something that can run things really well now and will be decent for four or five years. Even spending 100 dollars more on your computer can make a HUGE difference. However, the 1000 dollar area is where you will get the most for your money.

Also don't throw E-bay and Amazon. With E-bay you may be able to get a gaming computer for over 50% off in brand new condition (just research carefully!) and amazon has great deals.

The brand I use is Cyberpower. You can get gaming computer that is two or three times more powerful than another brand's at the same price. You can get quite a few powerful gaming PCs that match your budget too.

Browse around the site and see if they have what you need. Cyberpower also has good costumer support. You can email a sales representative that can help you find what you are looking for.

Also, don't buy into the whole gaming mouse and gaming keyboard thing. Those are ripoffs. They will only help you if you are already a Professional Gamer playing regulrarly in tournaments for thousands of dollars. (Protip: You aren't a pro gamer if you aren't doing that). All that matters is that the keyboard doesn't suck ass, and the mouse doesn't use a ball.
