KHRecoded Re:coded is actually a pretty good game

No, really. It's not as bad as people make it out to be.

 

The gameplay is solid in that it keeps switching things up without changing everything so radically that the player is completely lost. Things stay fresh in every world you go to, and you have to keep adapting to circumstances and thinking, rather than just smashing X through a bunch of flat stages. The use of the System Sectors provide a greater sense of tension and provides constant challenges to the player, so that they have to keep trying to play better and can't just glide through without a hitch, while at they same time not making the challenges 100% necessary to pass the game, but reward you if you take the time to try.

 

The keyblades are probably the most useful in the series, and the most intuitive. Each keyblade offers practical benefits to using them, instead of just stat boosts: Lady Luck gives you HP while you block, Three Wishes increases your combo, etc. The player has to learn how each keyblade works and then use them appropriately, rather than just treating each one the same. Also, breaking the mold of "the later keyblades are always stronger," each one is balanced in its own way that you can use one of the earlier ones you get and still find uses for it. My favorite is Lady Luck, which is the second one you obtain, because even though its weaker in battle, that HP recovery from blocking is a lifesaver.

 

The story, while not as complex as some of the others, is still surprisingly good. There's a hint of mystery throughout the entire affair, with bits and pieces of information coming at you gradually, and while the payoff is admittedly a little weak, the overall execution of mystery is handled very well. Also, Data Sora has a good story arc, coming out of nothing, finding sentience, and then tragically has to forget everything that he has learned, as if it never happened at all.

 

I recommend (or, should I say, Re:commend?) playing through it again and seeing if you like it any better.

Most of the hate comes from it basically being three watered down rehashes of the first game each one more so then the last. Personally I like the game and do not view it as such. But I did notice you played through the same world over and over again. The first time when you visit the worlds themselves Worlds that we've already been to, multiple times in fact. The second time when you play through the poor facsimiles inside Data-Riku (oh God that sounds so wrong) and the third time when you travel through the imitations in CO and just meet the memories of the characters while the scenery stays more or less the same as the castle with just the occasional portrait of a locale popping up in the background. I could see how some people may find that tedious.

Nothing KH is useless, you just have to know where to look for the good stuff. I think the whole reason for Re: Coded was to use the data Sora to see if the real Sora could handle the pain. It was a beta test before Yen Sid and Mickey threw the real thing to the wolves.

I liked re:coded a lot. The gameplay was great overall. I think the only reason people hate it is because they expect some big almighty plot compared to the normal one it has. That or they're still pissed they have to wait a little bit for kh3.

I also am a fan of Re:coded.  The gameplay had some unique variances that the other titles didn't have, and given the limitations it had on the DS, I think it was a pretty good game.  It was admittedly lacking in the story department in comparison to the other KH games, but I don't think it was awful, either.

Despite it being mostly filler, I absolutely loved this part of the story. I mean it dives deep into Sora's heart and show's us just how strong and pure-hearted he is (because, unfortunately I do feel the other games portray him as a rather 2-Dimensional character, well at least when on Disney worlds, KH3D and KH1 give him a lot of character in his strife, because he faced more emotional turmoil which I felt was lacking in KH2 since his main goal was mostly to defeat the organization, even after saving Kairi he wasn't that vibrant) and I was very impressed by it, I mean this incarnation of him literally went to Hell and back for friends he hardly knew, lost his memory and did it again while being emotionally tested. People don't realize how strong a person Sora is, even if he were to lose Riku and Kairi I'm sure he'd still move on for their sake, and even fight God to make things right.

It is a good game. It is important if you want to understand KH3D fully and it along with KH3D leads to KH3.
