Am I the only one that actually likes Final Fantasy XIII?

Recommended Posts

Yes, yes you are.

Though not really, as all the subsequent posts will state. haven't seen an FF game with this much of a rabid irrational fanbase since 7.

I'm actually holding off buying it because of all the hate it gets. I got a PS3 for Christmas (for KHHD) and there aren't really that many games that interest me, which is a shame because I don't want such a big present that pretty much left my family broke, to be a waste of money. I like Journey, the Sly Cooper trilogy, and the Shadow of the Colossus HD remake looks good. Gonna get Okami HD at some point too. But other than that, most of them are shooters and that's my least favourite type of game because they're just so pointless and mind-numbing.

The only FF game I have is XII, and it's not exactly that great... so was considering getting XIII for my PS3. But the hate on it just makes me think it'll be another possible waste of money.

You want to know why it's the worst and most crappy game ever made? Well, I'm about to tell you why everyone, including myself hates the game so much and why it's not as well-received as other FF games. For one there's the whole linear path that you have to take throughout the whole game. There is NO exploration, NO free roaming, and worst of all NO sidequests. This is just one of the reasons why I despise this game. Another bad thing about this game is the battle system. it's bad and plain out boring. Alll you o is "Keep using auto-attack until you win hurr durr" and if you've heard lot of people stated that it was boring and even made people literally fall asleep while playing through the game. The battle system is just too simple. There's no strategy whatsoever involved in this game. The AI is just fighting your battles for you which I don't want. I'd rather fight enemies, myself rather than have the game do it for me thanks. The another thing I hate about this game: the fact that you can't even level grind in this game. I mean one you go forward you can't turn back if you want to level grind or anything. Which is another reason why i will never buy this game. I mean why can't I level grind if i get stuck on a boss or something? Huh, Square-Enix? Oh, and let's not forget that it's hard obtaining items in that game. It takes pretty much forever to get the items that you want off certain enemies. Which can be a chore.

So there you have it. My reasons why I hate this game so much and will never buy it.

You are not alone, I too like Final Fantasy XIII. When I played FFXIII-2 I fell in love with the trilogy. Now I'm only waiting for the last game, Lightning Returns: FFXIII and  It's going to be one of the best in the trilogy!

Does anyone, besides me, like Final Fantasy XIII?  For years I've heard nothing but negativity about the game, which made me postpone actually getting it to try.  After watching a few recommended cutscenes and learning more about the characters, however, I finally broke down and decided to try it (of course, getting a PS3 did promote that. ;))  After having played it for about a week, I can definitely say it's very different than any FF I've played.  The most similar I could say it is to is Final Fantasy VII, but even then it's quite different.  Not a bad different, though.

Even though I'm a huge fan of the older FF games, I daresay that I'm thoroughly enjoying XIII.  The story, while it's depressing in and of itself, is oddly upbeat, and I just really like the positive attitude going on with these characters.  Final Fantasy VII struck me as such a dark and depressing game in comparison.  Lightning isn't my favorite character, but even then she's not the royal witch everyone says she is.  She's harsh on the outside, but not really that way on the inside.

I don't know, I'm playing this game with a critical mind, and yet I'm just not seeing where everyone's hating it so much.  Does everyone just not like it because it's new and not like the older Final Fantasies?  Did they not like the characters?  The only downfall I can really see to this game is the lack of customization, world map, difficulty, and combat options.  But apart from all that...I think the game's really good.

So, am I the only one that actually thinks Final Fantasy XIII is a good game?

I have to agree, I don't have a PS3 but I have played the older FFs too - I still remember the hype when watching the japanese gameplay when it first came out. It definitely is proposes a fresh face to the FF series (even the iconic victory fanfare is gone). But nonethless its too early to judge a book by cover and by continuing on you learn that it too shares many themes from the FF series even if it is presented in an unfamiliar way.

The hate maybe directed at the how the game is presented, the story flaws, or maybe the linear fashion of the game. Despite all this criticism, no game is perfect and FFXIII is just like many games out there - there will be avid lovers...and passionate haters.

I for one love FFXIII (not obsessively) because it is a unique FF title in the series, it has its pros and cons but that doesn't make it inferior to the other games.

I mean the story is kinda messed up now that you look at Lightning Returns (fanservice much?)...but the bottom line is, its just a game with its own story to tell.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is going to have all that stuff.

I always assumed that it was just crap. Never actually played it though

I haven't completed it yet, but I'm about halfway through and love it so far.  I'm all about story and character development when it comes to an RPG though, so I might be a minority in my reasoning for appreciating the game.

I'm actually holding off buying it because of all the hate it gets. I got a PS3 for Christmas (for KHHD) and there aren't really that many games that interest me, which is a shame because I don't want such a big present that pretty much left my family broke, to be a waste of money. I have never finished XII so I can't fairly judge it, but I seriously didn't like what I've played of it.  The characters don't have much depth, the story is decent yet a little flat.  The gameplay isn't horrible, but I couldn't really get into it myself.  You might want to consider trying out XIII--it's really not as bad as some people make it out to be.  Of course, everyone will like and dislike different things, but I think you'd really have to try it out for yourself to see if it's something that interests you.  Personally I'm really enjoying it, so I definitely don't think it's all bad.

So there you have it. My reasons why I hate this game so much and will never buy it.

You said that you won't purchase the game, but you HAVE played it, correct?  Because from what you mentioned I'd dislike it too, but it's not too bad when you're actually playing the game.  I really think it has a lot to do with why someone's playing the game and what they're expecting out of it.  For me, I'm looking for an RPG that has plenty of character and story development to interest me, as well as some customization when it comes to equipment and armor.  I love a good challenge, as well as puzzle-solving.  Final Fantasy XIII has great character development, along with a pretty good story.  However, I do understand where you're coming from with the combat styles, and this was something that I can see being an issue about this game.  I can easily look past it since I enjoy the rest of the game, but I would've preferred it there were more options in battle.

Having said that, it's not just a simple "auto-attack" and you win.  There's actually a bit you have to strategize with in order to acquire a successful score after a battle, including getting the right paradigms at the correct moment and stagger your attacks.  And if an enemy has a weakness you can choose what attack methods you wish to use.  So really, there ARE options, it's just not as many.  I also believe the auto-attack was built in for beginners who don't enjoy ATB combat, who don't need to learn the system's ins and outs if they don't want to.  It was pretty unique to the FF series, and I was mildly entertained by the variance.  I kind of miss not being able to grind levels if you'd like to, but I enjoy getting to visibly see enemies and choosing whether I want to fight or not.  (I remember getting pretty tired of fight after fight in FF6 and 10...)

I respect your opinion and dislike for the game, and, again, I think it depends on what's important to the player.  I can forgive lacking gameplay if the story accommodates it, but that's not to say everyone will.  I just feel that everyone says "it's a bad game" without fully analyzing it for what it is.

I have to agree, I don't have a PS3 but I have played the older FFs too - I still remember the hype when watching the japanese gameplay when it first came out. Thank you; I'm glad someone shares similar views to myself!  As I mentioned above, I think it really depends on what the player's looking for in an RPG.  If your top priority is finding good storytelling then chances are you'll like FFXIII, but if you're looking for a challenge with complex gameplay and customizable quests, well, it might just not appeal to you.  I'm one that likes a wide variety; sometimes I love the creativity that RPGS offer where you can fully customize things, whereas other games satisfy me greatly even if I don't have to put much effort into them.  Maybe it's just me, but FF XIII reminds me more of a movie than an actual game, which could be another reason people don't like it as much.

But rambling aside, I wholeheartedly agree with your points, and I do think you might be right as far as why some people hate the game so much.

I don't really understand the haters of this game. Yeh, it has flaws and it could be a bit more open at some places and it would be nice to control more than one person during battles like FF 1- FF 10.

However it has a magical bunch of characters and a heart-warming storyline and some really nice songs. Plus each Final Fantasy has it's flaws, even the oh-so-magical FF 7 has grammar and spelling mistakes in the English translation.

Plus if there was a choice between the huge open world where it's so damn big that you're most likely to get lost and have to spend $30 on a walk-through just to go next OR the linear path where it's basically a straight line..... I'll choose the straight line any-day.

FF 8 has alot of haters too and it's like.... why ? The game is fantastic, same with FF 13.

EDIT- I want a Fang and Snow plushie. Maybe one of Hope as well.

 You didn't even bother playing the whole game, DIDN'T YOU?!! WELL?? How can you critcize it, WHEN YOU DIDN'T EVEN PLAY IT FROM START TO FINISH????????

Once you get to Ch. 11, it becomes A HUGE FREE ROAM!!!!! AND YOU GET OVER 60 SIDEQUEST AND SUPER HARD AND FUN MISSIONS. ONCE YOU GET TO CH. 11, YOU CAN GRIND EFFICIENTLY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET THE GROWTH EGG WHICH DOUBLES YOUR CP. YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE AUTOBATTLE, YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR OWN COMMANDS YOU KNOW. ITS JUST THERE, FORGET ABOUT IT. Once you get to the end of the game, there is an unbelievable amount OF STRATEGY DUE TO SOME OF THE OVERPOWERED ENEMIES IN THIS GAME.

Dude, next time you criticize a game, make sure you've played it completely, and get your facts straight next time. Seriously. <_<

Have a look at what GameSpot and IGN etc said about the game.

I honestly can't wait to play it.

Gotta play FF XII first...

Finally, someone who Wants to play the game!!

I admit, i did get sick of the game at first, due to the linearity and no exploration at the start. But once you get to Ch. 11, thats when it becomes more like a REAL FF game, with OP enemies to grind on, a ton of sidequests, and exploration. And towards the end game, you need alot of strategy unless you have leveled up enough. And even at max stats, some enemies are incredibly hard anyway.

XIII-2 was a much better improvement tho, IMHO. ^_^

You're not the only one,but according to the sacred religion of the bullshit fanbase of Final Fantasy, anyone who likes 13 shall be punished, mocked, beaten, killed and not considered a FF fans just because you like it.Believe me,they'll hunt you down to your grave until you say: I hate 13.

I assure you, that happened to me even before I said anything about 13.This fanbase is bullshit
