I find it weirdly amusingly cute.

That smile is adorable even though he's like committing suicide the next second  

 

I think that fact that he goes out with a smile makes the scene even sadder, even though we know he comes back a couple scenes later.

He smiles pretty much for the reason the first poster said: to reassure Donald and Goofy. It's also a nice round about because when Sora first met them Donald told Sora he had to smile. It was because of Sora's funny face that they had their first real laugh/good memory together. Before he impales himself Sora decides to give Donald and Goofy one last silly smile, only this time it can't make them laugh.
