nothing really. It's a slightly improved resolution, and a higher range of colours. Basically, if you had a TV much bigger than that, it'd be kind of cool.

So all in all, this isn't terribly exciting stuff.

How is 4x 1080p slightly better?

We didn't go from 480 to 720. We went from 576 to 720.

 

If you compared 1080p to 4K on a 100" TV you would see a big difference.

North Americans didn't.

there reaches a point where resolution just can't make as much of a difference to the human eye

To put it simply, a casual observer can see the difference between HD and SD. 

That's not the case with 1080p to 4k

wait, out of curiosity, are you one of those people who thinks the jump from DVD to Blu Ray was bigger than from jump from VHS to DVD?

That was North America's choice. So they must put up with 480p for SD channels and DVDs.

 

Of course not. The VHS was analogue technology.
