Tails 6,692 Posted December 11, 2012 (edited) Which do you like more? Western games? Or Japanese games? I'd have to say I like Western games more. It's just that they have a lot more action and excitement than Japanese games. Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese games too but Western games (like Uncharted, INFAMOUS 1&2, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, and Rachet&Clank) pretty much appeal more to me. The only Western games i hate are the Call of Duty franchise and all those other military-type shooter games. Edited December 11, 2012 by Tails

Queen Tery 4,591 Posted December 11, 2012 Tough one. Probably Japanese. But I do like my fair share of Western games, too.

MrSanderss 80 Posted December 11, 2012 Overall, Japanese. I just find most Japanese games more fun.
Oishii 3,987 Posted December 11, 2012 You all must bow down to the glory that is Japanese games! My answer is obvious, but even without my interest in Japanese culture, western companies just don't make any fantasy games >> 1 FireRubies1 reacted to this
Ruran 481 Posted December 11, 2012 When I look for games I don't actively look to see where they're from but I do seem to gravitate more towards Japanese.
Amon 4,279 Posted December 11, 2012 (edited) I don't know, there seems to be more variety story wise in Western games, In Japanese games the stories tend to feel really familiar. Not to say there is a lot of originality in western games, but even if they are telling us the same stories over and over again, each time they do it the experience feels different. Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese games. Shadow of the Colossus is probably one of the greatest games ever created, it certainly trumps 99% of all Western Games. But games like SotC are rare gems among the Japanese game market. Overall I feel that 90% of the Japanese game involves you fighting your former mentor/best friend, trying to stop someone from harnessing some evil power, and you have to make a hero's sacrifice at some point in the game. In western games on the other hand feel more varied. Yeah, this is like the 30th time your fighting aliens/nazi's/russians/zombies this year but it's slightly different than the last time you did it. Maybe this time it's a battle for survival, or hell maybe you are just blowing stuff up for fun! Look at games like Red Dead Redemption, or any of the Valve games, hell even Call of Duty, yes CALL OF firetruckING DUTY managed to keep you interested and surprised at every turn. I mean the multiplayer is always the same bullcrap but shoving your knife into the throat of a zombie or kicking some terrorist off a bridge feels new and refreshing every time you do it. Western games have their faults to, a good portion of the top games are, in a nutshell, "KILL, DESTROY, BURN! KILL, DESTROY, BURN" and don't have the slower paced story driven segments of games that Japanese game do a FANTASTIC job at doing but even in the midst of all of this often pointless violence, somehow the writers managed to punch in true emotion and attachment for the characters. After kicking alien ass with Sergeant Johnson for 3 games I was heartbroken when I saw his mangled corpse on the ground at the end of Halo 3. In Team Fortress 2, half the fun comes from playing as the vivid, diverse and unique characters in the game. In the Portal games, you somehow grow attached to the villains. Even when they are trying to kill you, slowly and painfully, you feel really attached to them. And yes even firetrucking call of duty, one of the most overrated firetrucking games of all firetrucking time manages to pull this off. That second mission in Black Ops , the prison break in russia thing? Yeah, that had so much emotion in it, and was so cinematic that it was the best part of that shitty campaign. If every level was as great as that in Black Ops I'd become a COD fanboy. So yeah, I like western games a little more. I feel they handle story telling a bit better than in Japanese games. The story is what draws me to games the most. If a game has a story/backstory I can really get into I'll absolutely love it. Japanese games have some absolutely fantastic titles that certainly dominate the equivilant western game though, don't get me wrong. Where the game came from really doesn't matter to me at the end of the day though. If it can provide a fantastic experience, it could come from the worst place imaginable for all I care. Critter 8 Posted December 11, 2012 I like western games more than Japanese games. Though I like Kingdom Hearts and I'm getting into the FF series as well as other games like Persona 3 and 4, my all-time favorite western game is Halo.

If you wanted a general survey then suggest the topic for poll of the day. And that wasn't an essay, that was a well thought out post. DragonMaster 1,166 Posted December 11, 2012 I tend to lean towards Japanese games. My favorite genre is RPG, and JRPG's tend to cater more to my preference. I'm not opposed to Western games, I just haven't found as many that suit my tastes*. *Thinking on it, I've actually got quite limited tastes in all forms of media; games, books, movies, music, etc.
