chapter ii

 

Genn struggled against the grip of the mysterious man, struggling to breath, panic staining her mind. Her assailant drew a bloody dagger to her neck, the cold blade lightly touching her exposed skin. She shivered.

"Don't struggle," the man whispered, "I don't wish to hurt you, but I'll do what I must,"

This was a lie, the man had killed for far less. After spending some time in his line of work, he had even come to relish a fresh kill. He practiced restraint only to ensure his next paycheque. He began to move the captive princess towards the smashed window, enjoying the sense of power he had over her life. Enamoured as he was with his high, he was taken completely aback when the princess smashed her elbow into his rib, with a resounding crack. He doubled over, and his captive struggled free.

The man recovered quickly, and lunged to correct his mistake. He reached out and grabbed a handful of the princess' hair. Her neck jerked back, she stepped awkwardly causing one of her high heels to snap. She fell to the ground, facing her attacker.

The man again moved to recapture the princess, focusing his eyes on his target. He was briefly captivated by her beauty, but ever the professional, he continued his advance. Out of the corner of his eye he saw lights flicker and the faint sounds of activity. He quickly assessed that it would be impossible to capture the princess if he waited any longer. A second later, a fist connected with his chin. The princess stood before him, defiant. She opened her mouth, preparing a sharp, and more importantly, loud, retort.

Desperate, the man shouted "Stop!"

A look of confusion crossed Genn's face. Her posture lowered slightly. The footsteps and shadows grew closer. The man had to act quickly.

"Listen," he began, "I was sent here to capture you and bring you to the other side but... your beauty is so great, I cannot go through with it. I must find another way. Wait for me, I will return, Miss...?"

The princess blushed "It's Geneviève, but... call me Genn." she said.

"Gennn," he said, smiling, "wait for me?" He turned to leave.

"Wait," she replied, "isn't it proper to share your name with a lady who's shared hers?"

There was a pause.

"It's baylaust," He said. And with that, he was gone into the shadows of the city below.
