Troldemort 19 Posted November 5, 2012 So i've been hanging around a lot with some fellow exchange students that are in my program most of them are from canada. I've noticed that they talk a lot of shit about america which I find odd since they made a conscious choice to come here. They're always saying stuff like how Americans are all assholes and are scum of the earth. They also act like America goes around slaying the rest of the world while contributing nothing to society. I also noticed while saying all this they act like their better then everyone else including me and that they contribute more to society then everyone else. My question is what has canada contributed to the world I'm looking for a legitimate answer so no stupid answers like maple syrup or igloos. I just really want to know why this group of students thinks their country is so much better when from what I see it's not.
oRoxas 17 Posted November 5, 2012 (edited) Unfortunately there are a lot of people who think that America is mostly like this. They see us as a big force that looks to take over and control things. For instance, in some countries instead of seeing the local souvenirs, it has gotten to a point where you'll see US merchandise instead. They have somewhat of a point to what they say, however I'm not all that sure of anything that Canada has actually done. They seem somewhat nuetral to most things if you ask me. Caity 3,946 Posted November 5, 2012 (edited) Tbh and no offence, that's the general view of America far as i'm aware (coming from someone in Europe, though I myself know not to abide by stereotypes, otherwise I may as well dress as a leprachaun and tell you all about how i'm drunk all the time) From what I see, there's 2 factions (of "non-american") view points. 1. America is a magical place full of opportunities, if I move there after school/for uni my life will automatically become better and i'll be living the life you see in movies 2. Americans are mcdonalds eating biggoted racist people with a stereotypical red-neck view, who are bias and delude themselves about the country (all countries have made mistakes) and assume they're the most perfect place in the world. Unfortunately the bad is advertised more than the good. Whenever an american acts like the way described in point 2 (typically anyone who tries to act superior is instantly disliked), it'd be advertised, talked about and spread (an example would be a meme showing american status' or comments and being shared on facebook), whereas a nice american, being polite, civil and kind with anyone is rarely advertised as much. EDIT: Example of the typical american comment that most people see and end up basing their whole opinion on america of This conversation went on, with basically a huge amount of information being factually incorrect (the one I found most amusing was about Hawking's being american and giving the world so much knowledge. He's British, only his chair has an american accent ') On the same conversation, a British girl superficially went up her own hole as well, ignoring our errors, which is just as annoying, however given the vast population there are more cases of the American idiocy's being noticed. Robbie the Wise 5,050 Posted November 5, 2012 It all goes back to people being misinformed and the making generalizations based on that misinformation. 2 Kishira and HarLea Quinn reacted to this
oRoxas 17 Posted November 5, 2012 Example of the typical american comment that most people see and end up basing their whole opinion on america of If that's an American saying we're better at soccer than other countries then they must be so stupid. The US has a relatively bad team compared to the actual good teams in Europe, South America, even Central America. And it's sad that they're being like a stereotypical American that can't admit soccer is a real sport.
