He held half of Sora's power and had to give it back. It still hasn't been clarified as to why Namine had to go to Kairi because as far as we know she didn't take anything from her. In fact, she took more from Sora. They could exist simultaneously before now it's just a matter of giving them their own bodies. Well, I think it was more a natural desire for Namine, because she believed she would become whole once she joined with Kairi.
