Canadian Bacon

Recommended Posts

I know this might sound kind of strange, but I really want to know;

In the United States, we have regular bacon, and then we have Canadian bacon. In Canada, do you guys call Canadian bacon "bacon" and our bacon "American bacon" or anything like that? Or is it the same? Or do you even know what Canadian bacon is?

It has been bothering me lately, and I just realized there were some pretty awesome Canadians on KH13 I could ask.

So...?

It depends. Most of the time what you would call American bacon, we just call bacon, and is generally what you'd find at most grocery stores or diners. We only refer to Canadian bacon as Canadian bacon when it's clear that this is the kind of bacon we're eating (for those not aware, it's a bit more dense, and seems to be served in a slice rather than a strip). So, yeah, it's a phrase we only whip out when we're looking for an excuse to be patriotic. ;)

Canadian bacon is regular bacon with maple syrup on it,. Just like how Chinese food in the US is mildly Asian foods drenched in fat

In Canada, our bacon is normal and non-sweetened, usually.

That's not Canadian Bacon!

What you just described is regular a Maple Bacon

Canadian Bacon is just another name for thinly sliced Ham.

KNOW YOUR BACONS, PEOPLE!

I believe this confusion stems from small differences in our cultures. You can't expect everyone in the world to know the same things as you. I'm glad to have come to an understanding in the bacon question.

What we call canadian bacon is also called back bacon but it can also refer to a type of sliced ham. And in America we have maple bacon, we just usually call it maple flavored bacon for simplicitys sake. I may not be Canadian, but my love affair with bacon knows no bounds.
