It wouldn't work if Amy, Rose, Donna, or Rory regenerated, so I'm glad they provided an explanation for the main character leaving the show. If not, it would be like Family Matters when the mother of the Winslows was replaced in the last few episodes with no reasonable explanation for the series. I also liked how they even explained why River can no longer regenerate. Also don't forget about the 10th doctors clone chick that ended up being half Time Lord as well.
