Japanese maps dated in the late 1700's and 1800's (I think, I'm going off of memory here, so that might not be totally accurate) don't show the islands, because originally, yes, they did belong to China. But because of the Treaty of Shimonoseki (spellcheck? ) in the late 1800's, a result of the Sino-Japanese war, that China had to relinquish claim to the islands. The treaty technically doesn't specifically include the Diaoyu islands, but says Taiwan island and all of the islands the Japanese deemed also to be in cluded in their territory. I forget the exact wording, but it does lead you to believe they were referring also to the Diaoyu islands. I can see why the Chinese are upset, but it's not their place to be angry. Also, from an American's non-predjudiced against either nationality point of view, China's economy is doing pretty damn well, and they're doing a great job of screwing over America. Japan's has been failing for a while now.
