I always took the sword I varied between the staff and the shield in my playthroughs.

The first time? I took The Staff and gave up the Sword...I don't remember why.

And after then, I would switch around.

Currently on my...5th playthrough, I chose the Shield and gave up the Staff.

The first time, I got the sword and got rid of the shield. All the times afterwards, I got the staff and got rid of the sword, since you learn Scan really early if you do that, and fighting bosses without it is really annoying.

Oddly, I've never chosen sword. Probably because every one else always does it, and I'm kind of contrary like that.

i ALWAYS pick the shield and give up the staff. always. It works well for me because I absolutely love defense.

I'm the opposite of everyone   I take the staff and usually give up the sword (or I'll give up the shield if I'm feeling masochistic).  I spam magic and summons, then run away, drink some esthers, and repeat

I chose the Sword, kept Shield, and gave up Staff. Defense is important too, magic not as much for me.
