KHBbS What is the point of being a Keyblade Master?

Recommended Posts

When visiting Cinderella, Jaque asks Ven what his dreams are, to which Ven replies that his dream is to become a keyblade master. The sentiment is more or less the same with Terra, who has something of a mental breakdown when it looks like he might not become a Master. Not to mention that all three protaganists seem to have dedicated the better part of their young lives to try and achieve this rank of Keyblade Master.

Why?

Why do they want to be Keyblade Masters? What is the point of being a Keyblade Master? What exactly are the perks and benefits, job opportunities, or overall upside of being considered a Keyblade Master?

This is a very important question to consider when trying to discern what exactly motivates Terra and Ven. If all they get off on is the idea of being a Master, what exactly is it that they get out of the rank? Is it just the title itself and the stroking of the ego? They can hardly go around flaunting this when you consider that one isn't supposed to meddle in worlds or let it be known that they're from another world. It's not like there are a ton of other keyblade wielders against which they might rank themselves, given that Eraquas's clan and Xehanort appear to be the last men standing in that regard.

Moreover, what exactly happens to them after they become Masters? What do they hope to with the fact that they're Masters? Do they police the worlds? Gain significant health benefits and tax write-offs? What does one do after becoming a Master other than train other potential Keyblade wielders to become Masters? It makes sense for Sora and Riku to attempt this feat, given that the world is going to Hell by the time they come around and it makes sense to be the best of the best, but for all Terra and Ven know prior to Xehanort's master plan being revealed, there's no significant danger to be faced and no driving motivation for them to become masters of a martial art. Not even for self defense, when you consider the four of them live alone.

Are Ven and Terra puttinga whole lot of time and effort into something which they really don't have much reason or need to?

My assumption is that the title gives them the thumbs-up to go around, traveling worlds, fighting darkness and helping those who need it. Keyblade wielders are supposed to be a knighthood, and I assume the title of a master essentially makes them a full-fledged knight. Y'know, kind of like a college degree. You got your thingy, now go use it. Eraqus sent Terra and Aqua to go find Xehanort, protect the Princess of Heart, and quell the Unversed threat. Since the situation seemed like an emergency, Aqua was a master, and Terra would formally be one if not for his darkness, he decided to send them to go help.

Aqua wanted to fulfill her duty as a master, showing she's responsible, Terra wanted to prove himself and help out, and Ventus wanted to find Terra after he left since Vanitas's threat left him worried about what'll happen to him, as well as to finally travel worlds and make friends (he was sheltered and this was also a chance to go explore, but it was worry over Terra that made him leave). It's obvious all three of them have a desire to help others, and the keyblade is a tool to help them with that. Getting the title of a master would show they're really good at doing it. BBS was just a formal mission Terra and Aqua were assigned to and Ventus roped into. My guess is that Eraqus didn't know the entire, full scale of the threat, and figured his apprentices could handle things (too bad he was wrooooong). "Okay, the PoH are in danger so go make sure the Unversed don't get to them, 'kay? Oh, and while you're out there, go find Xehanort. He went AWOL and hey, him disappearing may not be unrelated to this thing."

I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and say that if they're putting all this effort into something, they have a good reason for doing so.

Well you have a good question there but there are some benefits of being a keyblade master which eraqus and yen sid stated a couple of times. being a master give you powers to change a world overall look , You can become a seeker of knowledge which is what Master Xehanort did. Other than that masters may unlock a hidden potential and unlock a special power only available to them in rare cases..Other than that they mastered their keyblade not entirely but enough to be considered a master :) hope this helps

Master Xehanort abandoned his title and responsibilities to become a seeker of knowledge.

Yeah but they actually say he renounced his title and position to seek answers. Its in a cutscene of Birth By Sleep. And its in a cutscene of KH3D

actually now that I think of it.......there is no point or benefit one might get from being a master.....the only benefit I can think of is that your freakin master will tell you a freakin secret in the end of the mark of mastery test.....the only thing that the master rank does is causing a certain amount of frustration to some of the main characters.......like what happened to Terra.......you might say the ability to unlock someone's heart but this one you can obtain through your experience not through some stupid graduation exam.......if you said ability to unlock keyholes of the worlds......Sora unlocked som many freakin keyholes during is journey..................so yeah .....the Master rank means absulotely nothing in the KH series except that you can get a badass castle of your own..........that's why Sora didn't give a shit about the master rank in KH3D ending....because he knows it doesn't give you any kind of benefit that makes you any different from a regulaur wielder......Terra kicked Eraqus's ass to save ven and he was a normal wielder........Sora defeated to incarnations of Master Xehanort(Ansem & Xemnas) who was a master..........so yeah....other than a badass castle and having an apprentice......there is nothing special about being a master

One would assume it's no different then being a master of anything else, until they become Keybalde Masters they're still learning how to use the Keyblade. Not to mention pre-Keyblade war when there were more than 3 keyblade wielders at a time, it meant you could go to other worlds and had rights to explore and study etc. Finally only Masters can take apprentices, if they think the world needs Keyblade wielders to keep it safe they want to learn t be Masters so they can train new ones.

I used to think that only Keyblade Masters could train new keywielders, but in DDD Merlin and the three Good Fairies train Axel...though I suppose Yen Sid could've been helping, and the others were simply compressing time for him. I have no idea.

...that's why Sora didn't give a shit about the master rank in KH3D ending....because he knows it doesn't give you any kind of benefit that makes you any different from a regulaur wielder.

He doesn't give a shit because it doesn't bother him. As he said, it is just a formal act to him, so he doesn't care. Other than Terra, he practised probably years for that kinda graduation.
