I thought that Riku only used the Soul Eater when he was struggling with the darkness inside of him. When he resolved his darkness issues, he was then able to use Way to the Dawn. Riku still uses darkness, just in balance bc hes twilight- the road to dawn ..The keyblade however is more useful to the present and more powerful though.
