I always wondered why Donald and/or Goofy disappear when Sora uses his drive forms.

Gameplay-wise? It's obviously because you become cray powerful. Story-wise? The partners are used to make the form, so in a sense yes, they become underpants and shirts From my understanding anyway.

I'd more go with no they don't fuse. As in the cutscene that shows off Valor, Goofy's still there. I dun completely understand why they disappear gameplay wise, but he's only borrowing power from them.

I think they just disappear cause you're in a powered up form there's no need for their assistance...

 

EDIT: According to the wiki they kind are

"A drive form is a special ability that Sora is granted near the beginning of his adventure in Kingdom hearts II once he is granted a much-needed new wardrobe. They allow Sora to transform into stronger forms by using Donald, Goofy or both in his party"

I never really paid attention and just assumed they were there doing their thing the occasional cure came in handy

Fuuuuusssssssiiiiiiooonn-Haaaaaa! No just kidding. Anyways when you read about the forms it does say, "with the help of Donald" or "With the hep of Goofy" and so on, then you can transform. Then one, or both, dissappears, so I believe you are right. but I dont think the actually fuse, more ike you borrow power from them and the take a breather.... Lazy bums...

Yup, those are definitely a fusion

Possibly, but I just think that they only made them cards because having party members in KH CoM would probably take away from the battle gameplay.

The card mechanic exists to cirumvent ths GBA's limitations. But it's also a plot point and should be treated as such

Well, not for Goofy and Donald though for Plot Points. They were there with Sora the whole time, whereas the cards were only supposed to be memories that Sora had (from combat to spells and the worlds as well).
