KeyOfVentus 90 Posted July 28, 2012 So I'm on amazon and I'm looking at stuff really just to look cause I have no money to my name...and I find KH2 Final Mix, and next to it it says it requires a Japanese PS2...is that true? Cause as far as I"ve heard it's fine on American ones, either that or no one has ever mentioned it to me...so what I'm asking is, do you need a Japanese PS2 to play Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix? AnsemTheWise 1,114 Posted July 28, 2012 You either need a Japanese PS2 or a Swap Magic. I use the SW disc when I play imports.
kristi-swat 61 Posted July 28, 2012 or you can get a ps2 with a chip like I do which can play original and fake games from around the world...fake in the meaning self-written disc's
marinaAxel56 24 Posted July 28, 2012 Yeah, PS2 games are region locked. That's why people in the UK (ahem) can't play Re:CoM unless they go through the whole modifying-the-console thing which terrifies the firetruck outa me

That's wicked. I'll look into it. 1 kristi-swat reacted to this
Spectrum of Life 188 Posted July 29, 2012 If you want to play it with zero modification to your PS2 whatsoever, yes. I do believe there's other methods besides Swapmagic, but Swapmagic usually requires the least tinkering to your PS2 (depending on what model you own.) and the other methods require a decent amount of technical proficiency. But yeah, you'd need a Japanese PS2. Or a memory card with free mcboot (google it, easier than the other options).

earth_angel 73 Posted August 8, 2012 (edited) the ps2 with chip is supposed to open every game in every region....so that wouldn't make it a problem I know how it works. I just prefer free mcboot. Edited August 8, 2012 by earth_angel

earth_angel 73 Posted August 15, 2012 you have said I know how it works.I just prefer mcboot...so how do you call that?? I really don't get what you're trying to prove here. To avoid confusion to the topic starter: if you want to play an unmodified version of the FM, you'll need a Japanese PS2 (or swap magic, I think. Not sure, I've never used it myself). If you're OK with patching your FM copy (doesn't hurt your original disc+you can put an English patch on it) you can use Free McBoot (modifies your memory card, so you don't have to adjust your PS2 in any way). If you can't figure out how to do it, they have people to do it for you. They'll only charge you the shipping costs for the memory card, that's all. This is the method I use.
