You're hard-pressed to catch bugs doing the deed in the wild, so the female dominatrix thing came from how mantis boinking studies took place in unnatural habitats with lights and creepy people staring down at them, which stressed them out and caused them to nom the heads of their mates.

 

That's not to say they never do it naturally, though.

 

So don't worry, guys. All you have to do is piss us off if you wanna get your head eaten.
