Recommended Posts

Ra's Al Ghul (Batman: Arkham City)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUr8Ab0BT0Y

One of the funnest boss battles I've played

Mr. Freeze (Batman: Arkham City)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=fvwrel&v=JdX4DPQzphQ

Probably the cleverest boss battle ever

Xemnas (KH2)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPBMQmHxy8c

It had great setpiece after great setpiece

Roxas (KH2FM)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi9TXRhzT3s&feature=related

Finally, a subject near & dear to my heart!

Star Wolf team-Star Fox 64

http-~~-//youtu.be/52KAuhdp_G8

Reason: aside from SF64 being my all time favorite game, Star Wolf were the perfect rivals, pushing the limits of the player's skill further than any other enemy including the final boss. A shame then that they sucked so much in later games. Why'd you make them into anti-heroes Nintendo?

Gruntilda-Banjo Kazooie

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER4lzzziXTs

Reason: B-K actually had few bosses & most of them were beyond lame. But this worked to the game's favor by making the final battle all the more epic because it was practically the only bossfight of the game. But what really makes it stand out is the build-up: nearly a decade before GlaDOS made it popular, Grunty would constantly mock the heroes through the entire game. & in rhyme! By the time you finally reach the game if pulls aswerve & makes ya play a board game testing how much you learned of your adventure & adversary. Grunty is so final a boss she's not even truly fought until after the credits!

After completeing the triva game, going back to past worlds to collect the additional jiggies & notes required & reaching facing her 1-on-1 on the roof of her lair, the battle certainly has a lot of hype to live up to & boy does it deliver. The fight goes on seemingly forever, Grunty constantly changing her strategy & the player utilizing just about every move in the game at some point. Finally it takes the combined power of her victims to defeat her once & for all. That's how you ****ing build up a villain!

Donkey Kong-Donkey Kong

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Ey9OdQXV0

Reason: a hall of fame should include historical firsts. Donkey Kong is the closest I can determine to being the 1st ever actual boss in gaming. The player doesn't attack him directly in the final level but is doing something incrementally to contribute to DK's eventual defeat.

Sinistar-Sinistar

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyBtVwAsfg

Reason: While Donkey Kong may well the 1st boss in gaming, Sinistar is the earilist example I can find of a boss the follows the common tropes, particularly having to be directly attacked a multitude of times before dying. Oh, & that voice, in an era where audio was virtually unheard of, had to scare the **** out of kids back then.

Dr. Wily-Mega Man 1

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6izj_VHl2YM

Reason: The original MM had what I believe to be 2 firsts: the 1st boss rush & the 1st instant of a final boss with a "final form".

BTW, if any of the above are not actually firsts of their kind, do feel free to point it out. I'm actually quite interested in this bit of triva.

Greater Egg Robo (actual name of it)-Sonic & Knuckles

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHSHBe7HPs0

Reason: I list this almost for opposite reasons of Gruntilda: Whereas Grunty was made more special dur to the lack of bosses in B-K, the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles game had a different boss for every single level. & there were a lor of levels in what was a very long platformer for the time. SEGA had to create a finale that could surpass not only all of the other bosses in S3&K, but also outdo the final bosses of STH1, STH2, & the stand-alone STH3 & good God they delivered. Between the imediately preceeding mini-boss, the 2 phases of the main boss, the subsequent chase & the 2 phases of the bonus bossfight, the finale of Sonic's greatest game is whopping SIX phases total. Holy crap.

Metal Sonic-Sonic CD

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbfVC2ayMfs

Reason: Like Star Wolf, Metal Sonic is the perfect evil twin, you didn't even fight him directly, rather it was a race testing the player's speed & reaction skills. This should've been the final boss of the game, the actual final boss is pretty disappointing in comparison.

Hydra-God of War

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWFgh4xgi-Q

Reason" The 1st boss of the GoW series set the par for the sheer of scale & scope of the franchise. Fun fact: while its the 1st level of the game, it was the last to be developed. Santa Monica did this to use everything they learned about making the game to give it the best possibly beginning.

Big vs. Chaos 6-Sonic Adventure

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=o38evs8SAeg

Reason: Pretty much for the weird novalty of a fishing bossfight. Who knew that was even possible?

Mad Hatter-The Adventures of Batman & Robin

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAGXJE1krqY

Reason: Proof you don't need cutting edge hardware to create a specticle. The genesis couldn't

even handle mode-7 graphics much less true 3D, yet this is absolutely stunning to watch.

Meta Ridley-Metroid Prime 3

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK7J8Js7ovk

Reason: Easily the best of the many clashes between Samus & Ridley & a perfect display of their hate for each other: they're both falling to their deaths & are still more concerned with killing 1 another.

That was pretty weird.

And I thought that the Vorash from Metroid Other M was a fishing boss battle http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smiley-confuse.png
