Fault is not Linear (Or: Nomura is not God and Disney is not Satan)

I've covered this topic a lot, but not recently, so I guess it falls to me to pull out a refresher course.

First of all, let's talk about Tetsuya Nomura. This guy started at Square Enix doing 'odds and ends' he designed many sprites in Final Fantasy five, and began to become more of a regular in character design ever since.

Along the way, he started a crossover franchise with Disney.

But you know what? Nomura ISN'T the maker of Kingdom Hearts. You know who is? Square Enix, Disney, and all the staff contained within.

This is something that people don't seem to understand. Nomura isn't sitting in his basement coding the game himself. He doesn't make every decision, he isn't 'trolling' when he contradicts himself.

Much like how people complain about presidents and prime ministers for the problems of their countries at large, people blame and praise Nomura for EVERYTHING involved in KH.

So here's the thing guys; Nomura is a FIGUREHEAD. He creates the general idea, and character designs. He isn't writing the script, or making the gameplay. HE'S not the one researching HD remakes.

When you read an interview from Nomura, it's simply a script recited to create hype for an upcoming game.

Nomura isn't God.

 

Now for Disney.

Everybody seems to feel the need to blame Disney for everything. I guess they're a convenient scapegoat, and Nomura has made some strange references to them in the past. But there's something you need to understand. Kingdom Hearts is barely a footnote to them. They are NOT making much money off of it, and I very much doubt they care much about it at all. Yet people act like they are perched above the beloved and noble Nomura, waiting to strike with their censorship, and cancellations, and dark magic.

Disney isn't innocent. They're a large company, and their job is t make money.

But so is Square Enix. Sure, they're nowhere near as big as Disney, but that doesn't change the fact that they have to make money. And unlike Disney, they're actually making the game. surely they have more of an impact on what happens in the game?

My point it, whenever something goes wrong, everybody says Disney is to blame. And it's silly.

i kinda feel responsible for hatok creating this thread because i said on another thread that i blamed Disney for the mislead on NOT going digital afterall.

 

But after reading this thread he made, i feel stupid for blaming Disney. i mean you're right kingdom hearts is barely a footnote to them and Square worked their ass off to make it perfect.

Nomura is the director of KH. Do you have any proof of what you're saying OP? Because I don't believe it for a second at this point.

Yes, he is the director. But, there are many people involved in this. He also has bosses at Square Enix that can tell him, we don't like this so change it. I'll admit, the series is his baby and I'm sure that he has a huge part in it, but there are many others involved. We just happen to not know all their names, so it's easy to pull out the director's name.

I agree with all this, though I would say Nomura probably has little more say than you imply since hes the director and has to approve of the things made. But most people dont realize that stories are made by a group of people. Though in Japan there is more a central creator than in America, there are still other story writers that help develop the story. But Nomura is both the figurehead and the scapegoat.

But OP implied that he is nothing more of a figurehead. A puppet if you will. It's a ridiculous claim that I see no reason to believe.

I did not bring up that part because I don't agree with it, either. lol But, if that's what hatok chooses to think, then oh well. Opinions, opinions, opinions. Just like you can go on and believe what you want to. Personally, I think that Nomura deserves a majority of the credit, but we should also remember that the game was and is a team effort.

Maybe I should have been more clear. The Nomura we SEE is a figurehead. He directs the game and designs the characters.

But he's also a puppet and a scapegoat.

He really doesn't have as much to do with the creation of the games as a whole as we'd like to think.

Really, what he does is creates the juicy core, then has many, MANY people add layers of everything else to it.

I actually read somewhere that Disney owns the majority of KH not just their own characters and locations but original characters like Sora, Riku, Kairi etc. True, they're not featured in their parks or on their channel, but Dinsney still holds the rights to their likenesses. Also, lets not forget that the (English) voice of Xion, Alyson Stoner, is currently under contract with Disney due to her role in Phinnias & Ferb, among other projects. People seem to forget that it was a rep. from Disney Japan who approached Nomura about a collaboration not the other way around.

Yes, also most voice actors were actually provided by Disney, or rather, Disney seems to have wanted to use voice actors they had prior connections with (Like Haley Joel Osment)
