Chapter Five

Arigus explained to me the basics. I was going to enter the device. If there are other worlds and someone else has built a receiver then I will be transported to that world but if there wasn’t then I would be lost and would no longer exist. “You will vanish into a realm of emptiness.” Arigus explained. “But if you survive then you have to find out as much information as you can then report back to us.” Arigus shows me a small device that looks like a camera. “You will use this to record everything that happens.”

I nod as I stare at the huge machine that is the teleportation device. “Are you sure it will work?” I ask.

“Thirty percent sure,” smiled Biggs. I stared at Biggs, who just laughed. “Don’t worry you will be fine.”

“First we need to run come precautions. We will do it tomorrow.” Arigus said. “Valko you go get Zeka something to eat while we get everything ready.”

I turn to Valko who seemed to be giving Arigus a look that says: Why me. Arigus nods at him before Valko walks off gesturing for me to follow.

Valko brings me some food after I sit down on a bed. “Thanks.” I say.

“Hmm,” Valko says while sitting down beside me. “So you want to be a hero, huh?”

“No I just… don’t want any more people to die,” I say after I stop eating.

“I know what you mean.” I turn to Valko and look at him clearly. Valko was big and strong. He never wore a shirt, and he always wore ripped shorts. I have never seen him smile or look sad, except till now. “I lost everyone when this all began. My whole family died, except for Hetyo.”

“Hetyo is your son?” I ask.

“Nah, he’s my brother. I came here with him and his friends when our family died,” Valko says. “I was useless at first but then they gave me the role of a guard.” Valko smiled at me then stood up. “Eat up or it’ll get cold.”

I nod and continue eating while Valko walks off. When I finished eating I decide to take a quick nap.

I soon get woken up by Valko who was shouting my name and shaking me at the same time.

“What!” I answer sitting up.

“Time to get up,” Valko shouts. “It’s time for you to be a hero.”

I smile at Valko as he helps me up. I see Arigus, Biggs and Hetyo standing beside the teleportation device giving it a few final adjustments. This is it. I thought.

Arigus gives me special clothes to wear but he told me I will need to figure out how to use the special abilities by myself. The clothes I wore were black which made me look kind of emo with my black hair, but Arigus added a brown belt and a grey hat to go with my look. Arigus also gives me the tiny recorder and places it on top of my hat.

“Ready?” Arigus asks. I nod as I stare at the teleportation device.

“Good luck,” says Biggs.

“See you soon,” Hetyo smiles.

I turn to Valko who just smiles at me. “Go on then.”

I nod and walk forward until I am standing before the teleportation device. It was a huge device but the bit I would stand on is a huge tube with lots of beam cannons surrounding it. I had a strange feeling. I was actually going to miss them, even though I have only known them for a short while. But there was something else; I had a strange feeling that I might not see them again.

I turn around. “Bye,” I say as in step in the middle of the device. Arigus closes the tube in around me and presses a button on the machine. The machine starts to vibrate as it charges up. I take one last look at the men before I vanish.

A sharp pain injects into me. I try to scream but I can’t move. I feel like I am flying but ultra-fast. I just wanted it to end. When the pain stops I open my eyes.

I look around me. I am in a huge machine just like before, but the four men aren’t there. Instead its three kids, two of them look older than me but the other one looks younger. The one of the older ones was a girl while the other two were guys. I stare at them as they stare at me. My eyes were burning. Was I seeing things?

“Hello,” says the older boy.

I stare at him for a while. He had blond hair and looked exactly like the older girl. They must be twins. I thought. “Hi,” I respond.

Chapter Seven

I read the message over and over. How is this possible? What happened? What happened to Arigus and everyone else?

“Hey, are you alright?” Os asks me.

“What? This can’t be possible.” I respond.

“Something must have happened when you came here,” said Lara.

“No. Your device must be faulty.” I storm off into the room Lara showed me. My world, is it really gone? I stare out the window over the huge city. Everything was messed up. I am in a foreign world never to return home. The place where I was born, the place my parents died, my home. I knew my world was dying, but I always thought I would die alongside it. Or was my world already dead, was it dead when all the food disappeared, was it dead when everyone I knew died. This I really don’t know.

That was all I could remember from that night. I awoke the next day on one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. I remember the last time I slept on a bed like this, before all this started, before everyone I knew was dead. No smiling face greeted me only a plate of food sit next to the bed. I ignore it as I scan the room. My vision was blurry after just waking up. I was in the room with the huge window that overlooked the city and held various living supplies including a couple of beds. Close by me was the small boy who I saw from before with Os and Lara. He was sitting on a table, eating food off a red plate. His back was turned on me so he didn’t notice that I was awake.

The young boy wore a dark red outfit with black stripes coming down from his shoulders.

I try to move but the bed makes a loud creaking sound which alerts the young boy. The boy spins around before I even get the chance to stand up. As soon as he sees me he quickly turns towards the door hoping Os or Lara would come to his aid. “Wait!” I shout, while standing up.

The boy looked at me one last time, and then disappeared from the room. After a while of stumbling around the room from dizziness, Os appears through the door.

“How are you feeling?” he asks.

“Alright, who was that boy?” I answer.

“His name is Dimi, and this is his home. He let me and Lara stay here when we explained about the worlds dying. We don’t know much about him, he is quite shy.”

“I see.”

At that moment Lara came bursting in. “What’s the matter?” Os asked seeing the fear in her face.

“It’s started!” She burst out, after gasping for breath.

Os didn’t respond. Instead he silently walked into the room Lara had just come from. Lara looked at me for a second and then followed Os out the room.

I stood on the spot after Lara and Os had left, what happened? What started? If I wanted to find out I would have to follow Lara and Os. Is it something about my world?

As I follow Lara and Os into the room I see them talking to the younger boy who seems to be as afraid as Lara and Os.

“What’s going on?” I ask.

Os turns around as Dimi and Lara dash off. “No time, follow us!”

I follow Os as he chases after Lara and Dimi. I follow them past various contraptions and through strange rooms until we are standing in front of a huge opening in the side of the wall. Through the small hole was a huge machine which had buttons covering it like bees in a beehive.

“Get in!” Os pushes me through the hole after Lara and Dimi.

I crawl along trying not to step on any buttons until I reach a seat next to Dimi.

“What’s going on?” I ask as Os reaches his seat.

Os catches his breath, ready to answer. But he only responds with two words: “The Key.”

Chapter Eight

I straighten up and look at Os more closely. “What?” I respond.

“The king of this world holds a key that can open a rift in time. This rift allows you to travel to any world and for others to come to this world.” Os explains as I loosen up and wonder why everyone was so afraid. “But the rift will unleash chaos that could destroy this world. We must stop him before it’s too late!”

I jump up and shout: “Why didn’t you stop him before!?”

“We tried, but he wouldn’t listen to us. We told him that our world was destroyed and we even showed him the evidence of the other worlds dying but he still wouldn’t listen to us. He made us fugitives and that’s why we are hiding out here with Dimi.”

“Let’s go.” Dimi cuts in.

“OK. We’ll explain later Zeka, but for now you stay with me. Dimi will attempt to steal the key before it’s too late while we create a distraction.” Os sat at the front of the round, dome shaped machine and started pressing buttons. There were no windows or anything inside the machine so I couldn’t see outside but suddenly I could feel the machine moving. We must have been flying because I couldn’t feel the bottom of the machine touching anything.

At the top of the machine held a small hatch to exit the machine which Dimi seemed to have a close eye on. Os sat focusing as he held a leaver to steer the machine. “How can Os see where he is going?” I ask Dimi.

Dimi hesitates for a while and takes his gaze of the exit of the machine. “See those glasses he is wearing.” I look at Os and for the first time I notice the blue glasses that he was wearing. “They allow you to see through the walls of this machine. You see this aircraft is supposed to be invisible, so there aren’t any windows or guards could see through and see us floating in the air, which would look really odd so they would chase after us or shoot us down.” Dimi smiles and turns back to the hatch above us.

As I start to relax a huge jolt blasts the aircraft. I was unprepared and went flying into Lara, who slams her head on the curved wall behind her. Blood dripped onto my hand which was behind Lara’s head. I pull back and realise she was unconscious. Suddenly another bang sends me to the floor of the machine. My face was planted on the ground and I couldn’t see a thing. As I try to stand up I feel a small hand grab my left arm and pull me up, and before I know it I feel the screaming wind around me as I fall. I look to my left and see Dimi holding my arm. I scream as I look downwards. Almost the whole city was gathered around a huge stage. Huge groups of people and guards patrolling the ground while aircraft covered the skies.

It only took a few moments for everyone to notice us. Dimi let go of me and threw me a small device. “Hold on to that as you fall!” Dimi shouts and dives towards the huge groups of people. We were traveling to fast for the air troops to attack us so almost every land troop pointed their weapons above themselves and shot. Out of their weapons shot small sparks which looked harmful so I tried my best to dodge them. Dimi was far ahead of me and reached the ground before me. As he hit the ground a small field appeared beneath him which prevented any fall damage. As I neared the ground I braced myself for the devastating pain that will be inflicted on me. But it didn’t come, instead was a strange sensation that came from the device and ended up around my legs. I look around as people stare at me and guards start shooting. I ran. I ran in the opposite direction to Dimi, away from the huge stage, away from the guards. I ran towards the buildings which were very far away. I was in an open area where no buildings stood. Only floating roads and decorations were in this area, but I saw a lake up ahead. A lake which looked so much like a pool but no one was swimming in it.

As I continue to run the guards seemed to give up and aim for Dimi who must have been on the stage by now. I near the lake hoping to dive in and feel all my troubles wash away. I was out of sight from the guards and any groups of citizens of the city. A small ledge pocked out into the lake which I used to jump in. As the cool water formed around me I felt a soothing section. I couldn’t remember the last time I had felt such cooling water. As I rose to the surface I turned in the direction I had come from. Os’s airship was nowhere in sight but I could see the stage, I could see the King, But then everything turned white. I couldn’t see for a whole second. But then it stopped. When I opened my eyes I saw the most horrible thing I could imagine. I giant rip in the air floated over the stage and from where the king was standing was a shining light the shot up into the sky. The rift, what Os called it was something so surreal that I could hardly believe it. It was like someone had ripped a hole through the air. But something was inside it. Something was inside the rift and it was coming out.

I could feel a strange sensation as millions of tiny lights sparkled out the rift. It shone, lighting up the whole city. I couldn’t only see it, but I could also feel it, like it was, alive.
