Text A short story I wrote for a friend.

To my friend Jesse.

The dry sun shone on the empty beach. Only a young boy sat enjoying the warmth of the sand. Huge cracks ran down the beach while sand slowly faded down the endless holes. The boy lay on the beach dreaming of a world that was safe. He wore a ripped blue shirt and dirty black jeans. His face was crispy black from burns of a fire. His brown hair dangled on his head while it slowly faded away. The boy’s life was like this world, slowly fading. Only a small population of humans still existed on the planet, when the world first started degrading most people committed suicide, to escape their fate. Others chose to hide however only a few people decided to stay and continue with their everyday lives. This boy was one of them. His parents were one of the first victims from the derogation; their lives were flushed down a hole that separated their county in half. Food was rare to come by; all animals became extinct since they became humans only source of food. Later humans turned into carnivores, eating their own kind. The boy hadn’t eaten in days, surviving off scraps since he wouldn’t eat a human alive. The boy was always thinking of what to do next. He knew that he couldn’t survive forever, sometimes he even gave up. Water has covered up nearly every bit of land although the land was fading itself. At times people disappear into the ground one by one. The boy got up deciding what to do next. He always had to be cautious where he steeped, just in case he fell down into emptiness. A horrific sound erupted from underneath him as the ground started to shake. He had been in many earthquakes, but this one was different, it was much stronger than any he has ever experienced. The dry water around him started to shake while the sand bounced about. The boy staggered about until he sided to the ground. The boy looked behind him seeing a massive wave appearing behind him. He scrambled to his feet and started sprinting off the beach. In front of him was a huge crack in the ground. The only way past was around the sides but he knew he wouldn’t make it in time. So he jumped. He reached out trying to grab the other side of the ditch as the Tsunami engulfed around him, dragging him under.
