KH3D My gameplay Review of the japanese KH3D -Some Spoilers-

Recommended Posts

So, Hello everybody, I will got right to the point:

Sadly, I couldn't buy the Kingdom hearts 3D ultra mega super fabulous incredible awesome with chocolate bundle (The one with a special 3DS with KH3D theme) because it was $550 in play-asia plus Brazilian tax (with everything it would be like $800), then I bought the normal game last week and it arrived like 3 days later. So, i'm going to tell how was my experience playing KH3D. (Sorry for grammar erros)

I'm not going to describe the story itself, but what I felt playing the game. So, let's start from the start.

The 3DS icon of the game is a crown with a purple and black background, while at the top screen you can see the the kh3D logo at the left and Sora sleeping with his dream eater wonder meow at the right... For me just the KH3D logo would be fine, but yeah, let's continue.

Just like BBS, when you start the game, before the title screen, you can already watch the CG opening, which looks way better than the youtube ones you probably have seen and the 3D effect gives the whole thing a new level of "OH MY GOD!".

After, you can see the title with Sora Falling while Mickey is trying to catch him and Riku Flying. Then you can choose between new game and load. In new game it asks you if you want to use the Circle-pad pro( for the people who don't know, the circle pad pro, more than just the second analogic, it gives you the R2 and L2). Since i didn't have it, I selected no. Then you can choose between the three difficults, if I remember correctly, they are begginer, standart and proud. "WHERE IS THE CRITICAL DIFFICULT?!" To have the critical difficult you have to beat the game first. Why? Go ask Square-Enix and slap Nomura for me. By the way, I selected proud.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0zsnrkO4R1qkicnko1_500.jpg

As you know, you start in destiny island, but you can't play there, since in the next scene you're already at the boat. Riku just looks wrong with his short hair combined with his old attire, while Sora looks like.... Sora. After some time you notice that Riku's hair looks bad when he's with his KH2 attire as well.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrwgnd8B0f1qersozo1_500.gif

But with their new attire, Riku will loke awesome while you'll wish Sora's KH2 attire all the time. (I really likes Riku's new attire, specially with his short hair).

Well, right from the start, you notice that there is something off with the cutscenes. What? Well, how I can describe with my bad english... Imagine this:

In a moment, you're with Sora and Riku in destiny islands and they're talking about the raft, in the next moment they're in the raft in a storm where Ursula appears. "So... What's off?", I'll show you, just wait. Now imagine this: In the country of the musketers, Minnie is kidnapped, then Sora, Mickey and the others other go to save her. When you enter in the room where she is suposed to be, there is a cutscene where you have already rescued her, not showing how. And... Well, the big thing is: The cutscenes don't look natural, or in a other way to explain, it looks like there is something "lacking" in them. You'll constantly notice this in many parts of the game.

To see what I'm talking about, whatch this scene of the country of the musketers, with Sora: Jump to the first minute) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga7o2fZLojU

You'll notice that in a second they are talking, and in the other they are already walking, when in between Square Enix could make a simple animation of them start walking. "Ah, this? It looks so insignificant!" Believe in me, it happens all the time and it'll start to annoy you right in the start of the game.

Free Flow action: It's very funny to use the free flow action! You can jump and make almost everything you can imagine! I remember when I downloaded the japanese demo and the only thing I was doing was jumping and flying in the town! You can attack with it and the it causes great damage to a point where in the start you'll prefer to just keep jumping and smashing the ground than actually trying to attack the enemies, and this happens because you don't have to level up this ability, since this come with you right on the moment where you arrive at traverse town. In other words, the game gives you one of the greatest ability, right from the start. But don't think it will make you lazy to fight, you'll need to balance commands, attacks, free flow action and reality shifts to actually win the strongests enemies.

Maps: Here is a bad point in the game. First, if you think that you'll be able to make a tour in traverse town, you couldn't be more wrong. To start, you can't acess all the town, the only open place for you to go are: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and the new ones. So, you can't go to the shop, you can't go to merlin house, you can't enter in the gizmo shop, you can't enter in geppeto house, and the list goes on. It makes the game somehow superficial. Want More? In the world that never was - "YOU SON OF A -- STOP GIVING SPOILERS!" You can see the world that never was in the trailer, continuing... In TWTNW, you really thought that you would walk around the castle, remembering the end of KH2? Well, sorry to destroy your dreams. First, all the maps in the world that never was are new, the only old ones are that big skyscraper, that place that connect to the castle and..... Only, the next moment you can't even see Riku walking in the castle, you're already in that big white room.

Other thing: The maps are VERY, VERY BIG! "And what is the bad about it?" If you're like me, who don't just ignore the monsters and wants to beat all of them, this is a bad, bad point. Why? Easy! The enemies come in very large groups, more than any KH before, plus, you're in very big maps, what makes you spend many time to get from a map to the other. Plus, remember how KH works right? If you die in anyplace, you'll go back to the start of the map, losing all your exp, items and reverting any changes that you made. "Just don't die so" They filled this KH with monster which when they attack you'll just watch Sora and Riku in a combo where they can't get out, draining your life. It all makes a very frustrating experience, but I can't really complain. Why? First, I was on hard, second, I could just ignore some monsters, go to another map then come back (What is not a very good idea, since you have the drop gauge to deal with) and third, the maps needed to be big, since you have the free flow action with high jumps and it really needs space to be used in a good way.

The text is getting really big right? Anyway, I will try to simplify from now on:

Dream Eaters: I just wanted to kick them from the first time I saw that wonder meow. If you like cute things: Congratulations! You'll love this KH! If you don't, bad news, you won't be able to get rid of them. The dream eaters have a system called 'ability link" where you can get new abilites to Sora and Riku, and to unlock them, you need to have link points, that you get playing with you dream eaters in a game similar to nitendogs. I can support any childish thing, but with this I just can't play KH in a public place hahaha.

You can make make all dream eaters in the game, except the bosses one. Some are very colorful, while others looks more mature, especially the strong ones.

Dream eaters help you in battle, they can heal you, attack, etc. But their true power lie in the combation they can do with Sora and Riku. While Sora has a combination move, Riku can absorve them to get stronger and make new moves. At first, you'll prefer Riku, since Sora will have at first his wonder meow childish move, but later you'll discover new moves with Sora, while you'll start to dislike them with Riku, since you'll get really open to attacks.

http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/images/2012/135/997779_20120515_640screen001.jpg

But at the overral thing, I like the dream eaters more than the unversed, since some of them were just wrong (yes, I'm talking about the one that looks like a boot) and some of them were very cool, like the dinossaur, the lion and the lizzard.

With your dream eaters you won't feel as lonely as Re:Coded, but I wish I could talk to someone =D

The only world that you will re-visit is Traverse town, POINTS FOR THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU!

The battle system looks just like Birth by sleep and Re:Coded, not much to comment here. You can buy some at the moogle, but the majority you need to make from your dream eaters.

Reality Shift: The reality shift happens when you're next some specific item or when you stun a little a nightmate. You slide down the touch screen and a minigame starts, where you can causa damage to the enemies or pass a specific obstacle. The thing is: Some were too slow, making the heat of battle disappear. The only acceptable ones to use were tron's one, where you could make machines work for you or drop prizes, Holy hope (Notredame one). The only one that I really liked to use was Nightmare break (Sora) and Mirage Split (Riku) (The World the never was reality shift, in which you have a combined attack with Sora and Riku). You don't need to use the stylus, they were made for you to use your finger.

Here are some examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZFqFg18gc8 (Here you can see Holy Rope)

(I couldn't find a video of nightmare break / mirage split to show you).

Drop Gauge: The drop gauge is very interesting, making you switch characters. When you defeat a nightmare, he can drop some drop points, which you can spend buying some buffs to your other character, like a strenght boost, guard boost, free flow boost, or buy new commands, etc. But you can't stock points, since they will be converted in munny instead.

It takes about 25 minutes to switch, but it can be faster, since that there are some factor that makes the drop gauge drain quicker (the normal is to drain at 1x speed, but it can go to up 3x). After it is over, you have a bonus 30 seconds. You can force the drop thing, but than you won't acumulate many points.

The funny thing is that you can be doing whatever you're doing (except the pause and start menu), but when it is over it is over. Countless times I was almost defeating a boss, and when I was going to deliever the last blow the drop gauge ended and I switched characters and the bad thing is that when you come back you come back to the start of the battle (G_G).

A thing that I noticed is that Riku's part of the story in the world is shorter than Sora's, but, if you got enough spoilers, you'll know that thereisatimewhereyouwon'tbeabletoplaywithSoraso, somehow,Riku'soveralstoryisbigger.

I beated the game with 28 hours (5 hours was I trying to gain link points to my Aura Lion and My Chicken/Dragon like dream eater to unlock once more/combo life and second chance/last life at the end of the game), but I didn't do much in the game, since all I wanted was to beat the game to start on critical. I think you can get some good 40 hours playing it.

Unfortunally, the secret boss is Julius. While he is kinda scary and very strong, he isn't a major character of kingdom hearts like Mysterious Figure, Xemnas and Terras' armour were. So, now you don't have anymore hint about what can happen in the next game (except for the secret ending).

Oh, almost forgeting. The 3DS screen can be small, but when you play with the 3D on you just forget about it. I have my 3DS for some time and I'm pretty much adapted to the 3D, to the point where after playing for 9 hours straight the only side effect was a small lose of focus, not a big thing.

You may think that I hate the game, but in truth I loved it and I'm going to play it again now xD

This is the order of how I like the KH games, the first the best and the last the wrost.

KH2, KH1, Dream Drop DIstance, Re:CoM (Not for the gamplay itself, but for the story and the way they constructed the cutscenes), 358/2 Days (Good gameplay and awesome history, even if I hated the way that you need to organize your abilites)

The next ones are in the same level of "I liked": BBS, Re:Coded.

Again, sorry for the grammar and sorry for the long post, if you want to know any detail about the gameplay just ask ok? (I don't japanese, I just know hiragana and katakana [Katakana is the japanese way to write english, so I knew what attack I was using], a little of kanji and many spoilers =D

i liked this review and i agree with most, but i am one of those guys who love cute little doggies xD so the dream eaters are gonna be the best for me :DxD

good english, if you want some help space out your paragraphs a little with grammar or spaces (like new paragraph) but i can hardly talk.....my grammar sucks. The reason why i said this is sometimes you (maybe its just the way i read it) it seems fast and unnatural. again maybe it was just me.

Anyway i liked your style of writing and some parts really seemed like a professional reviewer. It made me laugh, and kept me entertained. ill give you 5/5 stars :3

Good review and your english is very good too. As for the walking and talking thing, I guess they couldn't get anyone to wear a green suit for the scenes like in FFX :. Or they were just extremely lazy.

Well, they start the game right in the boss battle because they want bold action. Maybe that's why they skip those parts, because it would "reduce the tempo" or something, the same reason why they put summaries of the other games instead of having the characters unnaturally explaining what they already know. Or maybe they had some time constraints?

Believe, it happens way too much in the game. Sure, there's no need to put non-important scenes, but they cut too many things in so many scenes that in the end it seens unnatural.

About the first battle, the thing is that the game is like "So, here is Riku and Sora ind Destiny island and LOOK! Now they're in the sea fighting with some ugly... thingy... yeah! Good luck!
