Japanese society is actually not very tolerant of same sex couples at all (less than America even). gay relationships in anime/manga/etc. are put in as extra fanservice for straight women/men (which is why they all follow the same heteronormative sterotypes) and most Japanese people hate real LGBT people. /srs bsns
