New Laptop (Future)

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm going into college in a while and I'm trying to figure out what type of computer I should get. All I know Is that I want something thats good for whatever field I go into in college (Graphic design, Animation, Game Design, etc). I have an Idea of what I may need and what I want:

14-15in display with 1080p resolution

At least 6+ hrs battery life

i5-7 processor (not sure which will be better for me)

Generally lightweight

Thats about it. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

If you're going to take this to college every day, then you need to put a lot more focus on lightweight-ness (which you mention), and small size / portable (which you don't). With these things it won't be possible to get a 1080p laptop, but you can still meet all of the others with an "Ultrabook". Look them up. I recommend the Asus UX21 or Asus UX31 depending on if you want 11.6 or 13.3 inches.

The 2 things that deter me from getting an Ultrabook are the fact that there is no disk drive, although I barely use mine, and that most to all Ultrabooks use SSD, which tend to get expensive past 256gb (trying to keep a budget between 1000-1500 dollars)

I looked at the UX31 and although I was able to find an external Optical drive (which Im unsure about how it specifically connects to the laptop) 2 things that I didn't specify that I'm also looking for that weren't present are a dedicated graphics card and multi-core processor.

Well like you said, you don't use the disc drive so why worry about that...

You shouldn't worry about the price of individual components, just look at the whole thing. My UX21 cost about US$870 before shipping, and that was with a 128GB HDD. The 256GB HDD models are just about 200 more expensive, I think. You really do want the SSD, it uses less power, and allows you to start up the laptop from sleep in seriously 1-2 seconds. They are extremely fast.

You're right about the graphics card, that's probably the one flaw you've outlined. It doesn't have dedicated graphics, so it's not very good with gaming. I haven't tried that much, but it did struggle with Minecraft.

The processor is dual core, I think. They +200 more expensive model that I mentioned, I'm pretty sure is quad-core. But you don't need a quad-core, as not much stuff will utilize it, and you'll just end up wasting your battery more than you need to.

The only one that I can think of is the Macbook Pro with i7 processor... I'm using this in my college...

However, the computer is kind of heavy, but this is the one I think is the best since it can run both ios and windows...

I leave Macbook Pro in dorm and I bring Macbook Air around the campus ;)

The computer runs great for graphic design, animation, and stuff.

Recommended.

I actually decided on getting an HP ENVY 15. When I compared it to the Macbook pro with the same processor, it also has a better graphics card and more initial RAM. And with a 1920x1080 screen it comes in at around $1349.99.

Then seems like this is a better choice.

Go with the one you like.
