Another College Question

Recommended Posts

Sorry for all the college questions, I just really want to be ready. I have a few, actually.

What is the required GPA for college?

Do I absolutely have to take two consecutive language classes?

Should I get a Laptop now, or wait until Windows 8?

How many colleges should I send applications to at once? My stepmom sends multiple job applications, so i was wondering.

What is an under grad?

I am wanting to know all.

The first 3 questions depends on what college you want to get into. Yeah, you should send multiple applications to different colleges, so that you have a higher chance of getting in and the possibility of having multiple colleges to check out and choose from.

-Depends on the college. For some it's only like 2.0, or even less, and for others (like, Ivy League) it can be 4.0 or whatever. Just look up the requirements on the college's website.

-As far as I know, you don't. But it would be far more to your advantage to take them consecutively.

-Eh, when is Windows 8 supposed to be out? If it's not too soon, I say go ahead and get a laptop now, or even just a week or two before the semester starts.

-Send applications to as many colleges as you want. Just depends on how much you're willing to spend in application fees, how many you're willing to fill out, etc.

-An undergrad is basically someone who hasn't graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. So whenever you here of undergraduate and graduate students, it just means people who are currently working toward their Bachelor's and people who are currently working toward their Master's (having already obtained their Bachelor's), respectively.

Your gpa depends on which college you apply too and when you are applying. For instance, if you are a senior in high school just heading out for college, this means you might need an impressive gpa (depending on the college) and send out multiple applications. At my university, freshmen usually don't get into unless they have like something above a 3.6 I think it is now. However, I went to a community college first and then transferred to university after I got my AA. I guess b/c of this, Transfer students have a better chance at getting in with a lower gpa then a freshmen does (I was told this by my adviser but this doesn't mean u can go ahead and flunk CC :P). Also, if you are considering a community college and you want to transfer to a large university, I would suggest you apply for a spring term rather than fall...b/c there are less high school seniors apply during this time.

And yeah, you're right about the undergrad/grad question...and I have no idea when windows 8 will be out but MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PRINTER.

Yeah, first three depends on the college you go to, as has been said. A lot of colleges don't even worry about languages, but it looks better if you've taken them. And the higher your gpa, the better college you'll get into, but there really is no minimum gpa to pay to get into certan colleges. When thinking about how many you apply to, think about how much the fees will cost to apply (Because not only do you have to pay ridiculous money to go there, no no no, they make you pay just to apply, acting like they're doing you a favor just for looking at your application...rant over) as well as costs of sending your SAT scores (I think it's only 10.50 per test, but it still adds up. And don't even get me started on how much I hate collegeboard...). 10 should be the absolute limit to how many colleges you apply to. Any more and you're applying just for the sake of applying. I'd say 7 might be a good number, but a few less would still be good.

An undergrad means that you're in your first 4 years of college getting a basic degree.

Thanks! That was everything I needed to know! Your very good at helping people. Maybe you should be a counselor of some sort. And supposedly Windows 8 is supposed to release this year/next year. I still have two years until I graduate high school, so I might just wait a little.

Thanks. Yeah, I might just keep to 4/5 applications at a time.

Haha well thanks! http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/happy.png

And if you've still got a couple of years of high school, I say definitely wait to get a computer. There's really no need to have it until just a few months or even weeks before college, IMO. And the longer you wait, the better, more advanced kind of laptop you can get!

Depends solely on the college but in many cases you need 2 languages and if not you'll still look like a better student then someone else who doesn't have those credits when it comes to them choosing who and who not to let go to the college.

If the college (or college program) has a high number of people wanting to go there then the GPA requirement WILL be higher in order to make sure the best students get in. The college program I'm planning to get into requires a 3.6 and 2 language credits and is has tons of people trying to get into it. I would narrow down some colleges that you might want to go to now and check the requirements to apply (and maybe check some of the college's scholarships requirements to see if you could try to meet those requirements in your next 2 years of school)

GPA in high school is meaningless unless you want to apply to a top tier school. Even if you don't do too well most community colleges have transfer programs into surrounding schools and those programs are based on your GPA in college. Also, there are always satellite campuses that do not require as high GPA has the college or university's main campus does and acts as a direct bridge into the main campus. For example Penn State. My opinion is community college is a good choice unless you get into a "great" school that is giving you a good aid package. Remember it is your money and the degree from any four year school isn't any less valuable if you went to a community college for two years then transfer to that school. This isn't an excuse to goof off in school, but just a reminder that high school GPA isn't an end all be all. Your friends and classmates might think that they are special for getting a great GPA and getting into a "great" school, but only a few schools really put you ahead of others and it isn't even by that much in the long run.

You do not need to take two language courses, but I'd advise it since it is required for pursuing most degrees in college, so it just makes things easier. Also, a lot of colleges like to see language courses.

Do not get a laptop until you are about to go to college because technology is growing so fast and by the time you go to college your computer will be out of date. Also, new tech will of course be cheaper.

Send as many applications as you feel is enough, but really only send it to colleges you want to attend. And I mean really want to attend. Do not send 10 applications for this is just a waste of money and if accepted to all 10 makes the choice even harder. I say pick 2 "safety" schools (Schools that you don't mind going and somewhere you have a high chance of getting in) and also 3 more difficult schools that are really either dream schools or just schools that are better than your "safety" schools.

An undergrad is someone pursuing an Associates or Bachelors degree.
