Ansem SoD's heartless, the guardian, grabbed both of them (Mickey and Riku) and was about to destroy them or something when Donald and Goofy jump in from nowhere and defeat it. It was the ending videos they posted that can be viewed on the first topic of the 3D Video topic. And yes, I know it makes no sense. But then you find out it isn't really Donald and Goofy. When Maleficent sent them into that dark portal in KHII where they found the ice cream, Donald and Goofy gave in to darkness while Sora was turned around and in 3D it is their nobody/heartless fighting for them and thus stronger. But they are main Disney characters so they still exsisted even after their nobody and heartless were made and forgot they exsisted. Then, in Coded the nobody/heartless Donald and Goofy got rid of the originals and pretended to be them for giggles. ......That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Everyone right now either seems to be a nobody or heartless of someone else, someone that lives inside Sora, someone that is trapped in a dark portal, someone that doesn't help the plot in any way (ahem Kairi....), or Sora, Riku, and Mickey. Gotta love the series though haha and all its mind twistingness. But I believe Nomora will read my post and decide it shall be the next plot twist, what do you think? But in all seriousness it is probably just for minor story purposes since they only beat the Guardian, not Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, Riku defeats him. Its something that is overlooked like how other characters that don't wield Keyblades can kill Heartless and have their hearts join Kingdom Hearts even though if the first game it says only the Keyblade can release hearts, hence why the Organization wanted Roxas and wanted Sora to kill Heartless. Yet, Squall (Leon), Donald, Goofy, Cloud, and others have done it. Its just one of those things you overlook, not everything can realisticly be completley story fit. Well I meant in cutscenes you can see them kill heartless and the hearts are released. Like when Cloud and Squall killed heartless in the 1000 Heartless Battle or when Sephiroth did it in that same battle. And in gameplay Donald and Goofy's attacks release hearts too.
