Dave 5,715 Posted March 20, 2012 The fake-out of Goofy's death is one of the reasons that I really adore Kingdom Hearts. You, the viewer, know that Goofy's not dead, but what the image does to the characters inside of the game is heartbreaking. Consider that Goofy is the picture of innocence and kindness, and in every mission you go into, he's the one providing the voice of reason and humanity, as opposed to Sora's often impulsive attitude or Donald's selfishness. To even have the idea that the truly good member of the party was even mortal, and that death was even a possibilty for him, obviously shakes everyone. This is emphasized heavily by Mickey, usually happy go lucky and essentially omnipitent, showing both sincere sadness followed by anger gives the character an emotional depth that had previously been eluded. Donald's reaction is even more heart breaking: he's incapable of forming words as an outlet of his feelings, and can only yell incoherently as he joins Mickey in the charge. They feel they have lost a very good friend, anad even if the death is fake, the emotions and reactions to the proposition of death are very real. Also, even if it does turn out to be a trick, it really is the first time the series actually talks about the idea of death. Most every other time, a character falls into darkness, or loses their heart, or does something that is supposed to more or less reference death without actually being dead. Here, the scene straight up suggests that Goofy's dead. You leave his lifeless body behind, and as far as you know, he's not getting back up. There's going to be no Heartless or Nobody to stick back together, there's no taking him out of the Realm of Darkness. He's dead, and that's all there is to it. Really, it's one of the most mature moments in the game in accepting that there is the possibilty of an ultimate end, made even more poignant that it happened to Goofy, who is not only a resounding presence within the game itself, but also in a larger cultural sense. The act of killing Goofy is killing an icon of many people's childhoods, and thus can resound not only with the characters inside the game, but also to the player in a more meta-textual fashion. 13 Shana09, Emo/Yami, Oishii and 10 others reacted to this

atheist123 583 Posted March 20, 2012 I didn't understand how Goofy could've been killed by a blitzball. Then, when i realised he was "dead", I was just annoyed that I had lost his equipment. And then I always forget to re-equip his stuff then he dies like a fool and doesn't contribute anything.
FireRubies1 1,325 Posted March 20, 2012 I was so sad!!! Even after playing through the game and knowing that he lived, it makes me want to cry. He was one of the only characters in that game that I really cared about
Isamu Kuno 2,512 Posted March 23, 2012 "That will make one interesting obituary." Haha.! I can see it now. "Mentally challenged, anthropomorphic dog killed by blunt force trauma from fallen rock." Honestly I was confused because I didn't actually see the rock. When I watched it again it didn't even look like it hit him that hard. I swear I saw it bounce off his head. Anyway why didn't anyone bother to check his pulse? 1 Ptolema reacted to this

WakelessDream 2,282 Posted May 22, 2012 I was laughing so hard the first time I saw that scene that my cousin told me to shut up. Now whenever I beat Demyx its like alright now time for goofy to die I always laugh at that scene whenever I play KH2...but to my dismay a cutscene or two later hes alive and well
AnsemTheWise 1,114 Posted May 22, 2012 "Wait... what?!" "The can't kill him. He's a main character." "And then you wouldn't be able to use Valor." "It's a lie." *four minutes later* "And there's Goofy."

Zenithia 305 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) tutti frutti. My first handful of reations: - "Oh my god! They killed Goofy!" - D**n there goes Valor form - Mickey is out for blood - That's one p***ed off duck. - Since when does Disney allow deaths? (feel free to correct me on this since I can't remember any) After Goofy came back: - YES!! Got Valor form back! - Mickey is back to his happ-go-lucky self - Knew Disney wouldn't allow a death of one of their key characters - Why did Donald have to club him in the knee like that?
