KHDays Days has the most well developed story and best script in the series.

I personally thought days had a very good storyline. Yes, there were a couple of hiccups, but I don't think they were severe as other entries. What I liked about Days was that we actually saw the trio form unlike the other ones, and actually show that they all care for each other (True, Xion preferred Roxas and Axel preferred Roxas as well, but they still considered each other friends). As for the repetitive missions, fighting heartless and doing recons and so on everyday is basically Roxas's JOB. And I don't know about you, but there aren't a lot of jobs where SUPER CRAZY FUN STUFF happens every day. It's just more apparent because Days has a longer timeline compared to other entries.

 

 

The other games had a good story line as well, but I didn't really think they were all that great.

EX: Practically everything in BBS could have been avoided if TAV just sat down explained to each other what was going on and actually working together, or even better if Eraqus told them NOT TO TRUST XEHANORT, but I digress.

I kinda hated having to do a bunch of missions when things just started to happen towards the end. I admit, the story is pretty good but the constant repetitive missions made the wait for a cutscene almost unbearable. The cutscenes were also really short for me, so when it went from video back to in game conversations in a matter of 10 seconds, i would get a bit annoyed. Unless the cutscene was actually interesting

 

Its a ds pretty much a ps1.3 and we should hope for 358 cutscenes in ddd

I loved 358 2 days :D I mean its tone was more serious and it unravels a bit slow and theres repetitiveness but its fast for a game thats supposed to take a year and its repetitive because life itself IS repetitive. Its pace is better though and the gameplay is fun though I HATE EMERALD SERENADES

I would go so far as to say that Days functions better as a prequel than Birth By Sleep.

 

Days does everything a good prequel ought to: it addresses the questions posed by the game released before it (the life and death of Roxas, and what he did with his time), embellishes what we already know while also giving new insight (his friendship with Axel, why he left the Organization), and fills in the blanks without creating new complications. The only complication that Days poses is Xion, and that's handled very neatly: her plotline is introduced, dealt with, and resolved within the game, without bleeding out and creating a rift in canon.

 

In regards to the argument that Xion is useless to the grand narrative: I think that's what makes her character work so well. One of the things about Mary Sues is that their tragic existence or flaws are never really treated as such: they are presented to be complications, but really are written as making the character more appealing or sexier, depending on what the writer is going for. For Xion, her tragedy is presented and treated as a tragedy the whole way through: she has no purpose, no true existence, and when she dies, she's removed from everyone's memories, leaving nothing. There's nothing empowering or cool about her angst, making it more worth while and heartfelt than, say, Cloud brooding for the sake of brooding in order to give fanboys a "dark" hero to worship. Xion's story is self contained with a simple rise and fall narrative structure, which avoids over-complicating the rest of the series as the result of her inclusion. It's a good tragic arc that functions well.

 

As for the rest of the Organization members: while I can definately see the view point of there not being really enough time dedicated to them, I think there's enough embelishment on a couple of them to at least make me appreciate them far more than I did just playing Kingdom Hearts 2. Demyx and Luxord, who don't get much screen time in KH2, are developed to appear as more laid back, casual, and almost likable. The one who benefits the most, I believe, is Saix. In KH2, he's pretty much just a stock anime villain: stone faced, likes to call everyone pathetic, speaks in monotone, and things happen when he snaps his fingers. There's not much to him. With Days, you start to understand motivations, purpose, and create depth. You get that he must not have always been that bad of a guy, given that he and Axel were friends once upon a time, and that he also seems to have a regret that the two of them are growing apart. He has incredible ambition, and that's why he seems like such a hard ass all the time: he wants to be the number two guy, and as such puts his work ahead of his personal interactions, thus becoming colder and colder (he's like Ebenzer Scrooge, really). You get the sense he feels insecurities, viewing Vexen and Zexion as obstacles to his climbing the corporate ladder, which means he has at least some kind of neurosis, rather than just being ultra-stoic all the time (nothing bothers me more than villains who think they're too cool for everyone else in the world, as they become very boring, very quickly). Suddenly, you have an actual character with some depth, and you can see why he turns more and more evil, rather than just being evil for the sake of being evil (like, say, Xaldin, who has no real motivation at all).

I get the feeling you aren't particularly familiar with Cloud as a character. Or Final Fantasy VII as a whole. Correct me if I'm wrong off course but that doesn't seem particularly fair.

I'm familiar, I'm just more cynical towards the characters than most. But I'll completely agree that it's not fair. ;)

The Cloud which starts off the game as a generally apathetic person who takes every chance he can get to emphasize that he is detached emotionally; claiming to have been part of SOLDIER, when in fact he never made the grade and has substituted his own memories with that of Zack; strikes up a three way between himself, Tifa, and Aerith; has head aches and flash backs as we get tidbits of his real past; has several identity crisis, due to machinations of Sephiroth, among other things; carries a sword which had a past life as the wing of an airplane.

I hope you understand; most people create their opinion of Cloud based on Advent Children or Kingdom Hearts.

I agree that the pacing was slow and waiting for cutscenes were tedious, but I loved the dialogue, character development and began looking forward to the Twilight Town meetings myself. In short, aside from the pacing, I thought the story was great.

It does have a really awesome story. But I still say that BBS is the best as far as story goes. :D

Birth by Sleep has some of the worst lines in the story and really predictable. In the english version, the way the lines were said wasn't that sad. Blank Points is practically one of the only scenes in the game that was good. I mean I love the story, but I'm not gonna sugar coat how horrible Eraqus and Terra's lines were. And when Aqua said "I am Master Aqua" in the Final Ending was just horrible. Ven's lines were probably the best since Jesse McCartney had already voiced Roxas. I love their voices but their voice acting and delivery of lines could've been better.

I respect your opinion, but I don't think that poor voice acting ruins a storyline?? Besides, I thought the voiceovers for Aqua and Terra were the only bad actors in the English version, but it didn't completely stop me from emotionally connecting with the characters.

It didn't stop me either, but the lines in the story were cliche. The storyline was great as a whole, but Terra and Aqua's lines were filled of them.

the story was good, possibly the most tragic of the games....... but having to go through the same worlds doing the same thing over and over again..im not gunna lie, kinda sucked.

I'm not too sure. The dialogues between the characters seemed rather forced. It kind of felt like they tried too hard to make them likable and give them depth so you would care for their eventual fates, but sadly tripped over every can of JRPG and modern Japanese animation cliché they could find. I still liked it, but in the end I just felt for the situation, not so much for the characters. The whole friendship just went right over my head. And no, I'm not missing the short time, circumstances and everything -- it just didn't work out for me. As I said before, I still very much liked it. I could have gone without and would have preferred a different approach, but it's fine.

 

I'm fine with KH having bold and stereotypical characters. Even if it spawns a lot of terrible fan fiction I really like how we don't see the characters interacting on a personal level much. It leaves much to the imagination and really makes the symbolism of the whole series shine. If they were to really flesh out the characters after the Xehanort Saga I'd probably be all over it because my precious memories of the past parts are save and, well, I changed in these 10 years as well. It hasn't been so long for many of the characters, but seeing them grow while being true the the game's overall theme is probably something that I'd enjoy much more than some forced dialogue to make me care.

 

And the somewhat self-containing part of the story, namely Xion, really isn't any better than what most other games offered. It's more engaging than Coded and most parts of CoM, but that's it. The secret reports definitely were the icing on the cake for me, though. Can't say I didn't get more out of this game than I expected and that it, starting in one game, overarching another and then leading into yet another game, was quite a ride for me and felt like a full experience.

 

As far as well developed story and best script go, no, I can never agree with that. It's more of a bonus, complimenting what KH, CoM and KH2 already established as a fine story.. in my opinion at least.

Re:coded and COM have the best scripts in the series. Both have proper antagonists and character motivations, while 2 and Days play around with angsty vagueness and go absolutely nowhere until the last 2 hours.

The story was fantastic, although those DAMNED......MISSIONS....kind of got in the way of the story. I wish it had just been like a regular KH game. The script was very moving, however and I liked how Roxas grew through the game becoming more and more himself and how visible the connections he forms have an impact on his personality.

I feel so offended right now. /sarcasm

 

Days is my personnal favourite and it's all because of the story. Gameplay wise, it'd be BBS. But I really, really loved the story. I think it's the angst. It broke my heart.

I loved the game, but I never got to play Birth By Sleep so I can't really make a call on that one. I do love how they developed characters in Days but they were introducing everything new in BBS. Days was building off of plot, characters, and dynamics that already existed (One of the reasons I am not going to pull the main games in this) so it is a toss up with so many different things to consider.
