Waller-pearson 60 Posted March 8, 2012 what does it mean if someone asks if a boss battle is canon?
XIIISwords 1,059 Posted March 8, 2012 They are asking if it actually takes place in the mythology of the series. For example, the Collesium battles against Leon and Yuffie aren't (why would they be there?), but the Unknown battle may be (depending on who it is). ssceles 134 Posted March 8, 2012 Some things can't possibly happen and are there for gameplay only. It's not something the character should actually remember. A good example would also be the Mirage Arena battles. In KH2:FM, for example, Sora can go fight Terra's armor. Did that really happen? No, because it's outside the plot of the game. And yet, some would say yes, because there was a scene that went along with it, even though it didn't connect to anything. The same could be said about the added Unknown (Xemnas?) fight in KH:FM in Hollow Bastion. Getting to that scene takes the game out of chronological order. On a normal playthrough, Sora wouldn't have gone back to even find that battle. The Mysterious Figure in Birth by Sleep is sort of the same: You can't fight him until you unlock him. You can't unlock him until after you've beaten the game. So could have even happened within the storyline? Nope. It's not canonical. What about the entire Sephiroth tangent in KH2? Some players may never go back and beat him, but because there are scenes related to it and it effects the position of NPCs afterward, I'd say it's canonical. Battles that can be repeated are never canonical: You can fight Vanitas' Remnant as many times as you want. It has to be unlocked, and it's there for a test of skill. Which begs to question: Does the boss really exist as a character inside canon? Sephiroth > Yes. Terra's armor/Lingering Sentiment > Well it's still laying about somewhere, isn't it? Is it actually sentient? Hell if I know. Unknown > Yes. Xemnas. Mysterious Figure > Yes, Nomura has more or less explicitly pointed him out to be the young!Xehanort in KH:3D. Vanitas' Remnant > ??? No? Vanitas shouldn't have been able to leave such a thing behind when he disappeared. If it follows the trend of past bosses, though, anything is possible. 1 Kello reacted to this
Critter 8 Posted March 8, 2012 There's also the Sephiroth boss battle in KH1. In KH2, he revealed he never met Sora ("By the way, you three, who are you?") even though gameplay-wise, they fought each other.
