Racist? Texas high school apologizes for fans' 'USA!' chant after basketball game

A Texas school district has apologized for what some perceived as a racist chant from fans after one of its teams beat a rival in a high school basketball playoff game.

Alamo Heights High School, which is made up mostly of white students, beat Edison High, which is predominantly Hispanic, in the Region IV-4A championship in San Antonio on Saturday. As Alamo players celebrated the win on the court, a large group of students began cheering “USA! USA!”Alamo Heights head coach Andrew Brewer silenced the students as soon as he heard them, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

 

 

 

 

Alamo Heights Superintendent Kevin Brown said he has apologized to San Antonio Independent School District officials. As punishment, Alamo Heights students who were involved in the chanting will not be allowed to attend the team’s remaining state title games.

The San Antonio district on Tuesday also filed a complaint with the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of high school sports in the area.

Whether it's offensive to you or not really doesn't matter since it was an indirect attack towards the hispanic individuals of that school.

I would've been very offended. Just because I'm Hispanic, it automatically means that I'm not a US citizen and that I obviously must be in support of Mexico or any Latin countries or whatever connotation they were making by that chant.

The other school wouldn't have started chanting 'MEXICO' or any other Latin countries name right? If they did people would be mad right?

It's not that I'm whiny and butthurt, it's that things like this ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

People think things like this and racist jokes are acceptable because hey it's no big deal right?

Well guess what, with freedom there are still limits.

Just as they are 'freely' able to be racist, I and other hispanic individuals offended by this are free to complain because it's not right, no matter if it was serious or not.

Freedom of Speech= the freedom to believe in something and to stand up to what you believe in an appropriate manner. This wasn't very appropriate at all or even acceptable given the fact that the great America isn't supposed to have any kind of racism anymore, direct or otherwise.

 

Sad truth is, racism is still around and most people choose to ignore it thinking it'll go away that way when in fact the way to stop it is to speak up against it.

Hilarious how this country is filled with many races and have racial equality, yet act racist. Seriously, you have to be from another country in order to be in USA, it was taken over.

We get so many illegal imigrants, are taking over america. Do you know that the primary language in some places in America is not English?... I beleive i saw something in an artical about in 10 or so years the primary language will be Spanish. They get beneifits and are taking many of the jobs. Maybe this is why we have racism?

Countries don't stay the same forever; cultures change and develop over time, and America is no exception, especially since it's still relatively young compared to other countries. We aren't being "taken over" by anyone, especially since this country isn't ours to begin with (if I remember correctly, Native Americans were living here quite a long time before European settlers arrived here).

 

Yes, illegal immigration is bad. Yes, abusing social programs is bad (but that's done by all races, not just Hispanics, js). But why should you hate an entire race because of something a couple people are doing?

I wouldn't find anything racist about that at all. I personally don't pay attention to peoples races unless the start talking about them, to me people are just people. The people that are really racist are the ones that accuse people of all sorts of bullcrap just because they said "I don't like the color brown" or "I would like a white sheet of paper".

 

And now it's boiling down to the 2012 elections which means I'm going to have to go through barrages of dumbfiretrucks calling me racist for not supporting Obama like they did back in 2008.

What are you talking about? You just posted an article to open it up for discussion. The fact that it caused an argument is proof that racism exists. Otherwise we wouldnt even be talking about it.
