It depends.

 

For example, if I want to play a Pokémon game, I'd like it to be something that you can't finish very quickly.

 

And if I want to play a game like Kingdom Hearts, of course that I want it to be big and have a lot of story.

 

Now if we're talking about games like Dragon Ball Z games, Midnight Club games and such, it's ok if they don't last long, unless if they're fun to play with (Replayability FTW!)

Depends on the game. I think if a game is going to be 40+ hours, it needs to have a lot of optional side-missions to break up the main narrative a little.

We all play games at different rates. What takes one person 40 hours may take another person half the time. I probably clocked 60 hours into Kingdom Hearts 1 the first time through and beat it the second time in about 10 because I no longer got lost. Sometimes the frustration and complication is half the fun, though.

10 hours minimum, 20 hours preferred, about 30 hours for RPGs, and then 40+ for really big or awesome games. I honestly start to lose interest in games around the 40 hour mark.
