What is kingdom hearts? I mean not kingdom hearts the game but kingdom hearts that Xehanort wanted... What is the use of kingdom hearts.. It gives you something? Xemnas needed it because he wanted a heart.. But what about Xehanort?

Well... It's kinda hard to tell you what Kingdom Hearts is. D:

 

In my opinion, Kingdom Hearts functions like a God or something, because it's stated as "The Heart of All Worlds" and since a war between Keyblade Wielders began just to see who would have acess to all that power, so we can think that Kingdom Hearts is really something, right? xDD

 

Oh, Master Xehanort wanted Kingdom Hearts to start another Keyblade War. For what he wanted another war, we still don't know Maybe Kingdom Hearts III will answer all our questions

Lu Xun explained what we know Kingdom Hearts to be pretty well, so there;s only so much I can improve on it. But I'll try.

In the beginning, when the worlds were joined, Kingdom Hearts probably was some sort of centre. It's the heart of all worlds and it's where hearts are born and where hearts go when they don't have a body. Eg, when a heartless is destroyed. It's also where bodies when they don't have hearts. Eg, when a person becomes a heartless or when a Nobody is destroyed.

In Kingdom Hearts 1, we saw that Kingdom Hearts is a source of light, probably the source of light for the entire universe. In KH2 and BBS, we saw that Kingdom Hearts can project itself in the form of a heart shaped moon.

Xemnas planned to use Kingdom Hearts to give him the power to take over the worlds and show that he could surpass Ansem. Ansem, seeker of darkness planned to use it to rule the Universe by plunging all worlds in darkness, where the heartless could be at their strongest and all hearts would be in Kingdom Hearts and he would basically have control over everything. Xehanort also wanted extreme power to take over the worlds and test his own theories.

It's a planet sized macguffin. As everyone else has said, it's pretty ambiguous as to what kingdom hearts really is (beside a powerhouse) and who (or what, if anything at all) made it. We don't even know where it is when its not being summoned, if I'm not mistaken.
