Top 13 comic book deaths

By: Ocelot

After watching Young Justice episode Failsafe and Fear Itself 7.1 got me thinking of character deaths in comics so i decided to create this list . writer

Geoff Johns said about superhero deaths by saying

“Death in superhero comics is cyclical in its nature, and that's for a lot of reasons, whether they are story reasons, copyright reasons, or fan reasons. But death doesn't exist the same way it does in our world, and thank God for that. I wish death existed in our world as it does in comics.”

Comic books are well known for having revolving door on character deaths to boost sales,to tell story or developed drama or character.People say they don’t take character death seriously in comics but sometimes character deaths are done so well that people really get affected by them or get great story and this is my top 13 best deaths in comics and i’m not counting one’s like batman parents and uncle Ben.

13) The Question

Posted Image

Vic Sage dies so Renee Montoya can became the new question but this death doesn’t bother me like other dies that do this because this one is done well.We see Vic trying to get Renee live back in order after crap that has happen to her. They have friendship that when Vic dies going crazy from the cancer that he has and Renee to doing everything in her power to save him creates one of sad moments in comic history.

12) Jean Grey

Posted Image

Jean Grey turn into a monster when she turned into the dark phoenix. She destroyed over billions of lives but in the end in one of best Marvel stories ever written she kills herself making the right choice. The scene is touching and sad which makes you feel sad for cyclops and the x-men.The reason why this scene so low on list is that Jean Grey has came back for dead tons of times and has became running joke but original death is still masterpiece.

11) Jason Todd

Posted Image

By the vote of 5,343 votes to 5,271 the young Jason Todd‘s fate was sealed to killed off which turned out to be The joker with a crowbar killing him.You kinda feel sad for Jason since all we wanted to do was help his mother but fans wanted dead he died and later came back at Red Hood. This was one of Batman’s greatest failure which was pointed out by The Riddler in Batman:Hush. This death haunted Batman almost as much as his parents death haunting him and Jason died in very graphic matter showing how evil the Joker really is.

10) Ted Kord

Posted Image

People treated Blue Beetle and his good buddy Booster Gold as comic relief and nothing more but that all changed when he died.Kord managed to use his athletic ability and smarts to figure out that Maxwell Lord was behind a global conspiracyto rule the world. He snuck into Max's castle lair to find out the truth, was captured and beaten, and finally given the opportunity to join Max or die he tells maxwell word to rot in hell and that was how he died.Ted Kord finally all serious business and showed himself he was every bit the detective Batman was. It was an unfair treatment of a great hero.

9) Elecktra

Posted Image

Frank Miller is the one who created Modern Daredevil and was also one who showed off how Bullseye was great villain. It was very shocking Miller decided to kill off Elecktra but moment was ruined when she came back to life. This issue is one of my favourite issues of all-time with Bullseye killing Elecktra in a fight with her own weapon. This event along with Karen Page showed showed off how Daredevil has got some damaged by Bullseye that he has to kill him in very mediocre event comic but this scene was surprising and very well done.

Posted Image

“Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely bombarded readers with emotion through one of the most potent scenes in Superman's long history. The last few pages of the issue sees a younger Clark speaking at Jonathan Kent's funeral, where he is witnessed (unknowingly) by his future self. The teardrops come once Ma and Clark are back on the farm, and young Clark is questioning the point of his powers if he couldn't save his Pa. Of all the times Jonathan Kent has died in comics, or even in film for that matter, All-Star Superman #7 nails it right on the head in terms of genuine emotion. Morrison serves us the best incarnation of The Man of Steel; unrelentingly human.”

7) Sue and Ralph Dibny

Posted Image

Sue dies one of saddest death in comic history and first issue of Identity Crisis is very well. You feel so bad for what happens to Ralph and image above is some powerful and it should be top 3 but damn plot twist in this story is dumbest of all-time.The atom wife killed poor Sue Dibny because she wanted Atom to stay with her even she was separating for him.Still this was one of saddest scenes in fiction and shows how important Sue’s life is.Ralph dies in much better series called 52 and goes out like mastermind planing everything out.Ralph in 52 also tried to get the atom wife to watch scene where she kills her wife which very powerful.Don’t be sad by these two deaths they meet up in the end.

6) Superman

Posted Image

Other deaths may have been especially surprising or long-lived, but Superman's death was bat-$#!+ crazy. Superman #75 sparked a mania that saw an estimated $30 million in comic book sales over the course of just a few days, catalyzing the impending collapse of the comic book speculator market – an event that would change the industry forever. It was global news. People who had never bought a comic book were affected on a deep, emotional level. People wore the black arm bands in public. In broad daylight. Actual memorial services were held.Superman, the symbol of everlasting hope and the unconquerable power of goodness, makes the ultimate sacrifice in a desperate attempt to save his adopted people.

5) Karen Page

Poor Daredevil almost every girl you loved as died and most of them died from Bullseye who knows how to kill woman.Like how Gwen Stacy’s death affected spiderman,Karen Page’s death affected Daredevil in same way even more so.It took Daredevil years to move on from Karen’s death it led to his mid life crisis where he became the kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen.Daredevil lives one of worst lifes in both Dc and Marvel so it’s nice that he’s trying to be happy in Mark Waid’s new Daredevil series.

4) Supergirl

Posted Image

If you are going to kill major character like Supergirl in event comic you have to make it the characters proudest moment showing how epic the character is and that’s what happens to Supergirl when she dies in COIE.She goes up against the Anti-Monitor one of most evil villians in DCU and she punchs thing almost killing it but Anti-Monitor got lucky shot killing Supergirl. This death was powerful and one of best deaths in comics which made me fan of the Supergirl character.

Final Part

3) Gwen Stacy

Posted Image

The death of Gwen Stacy shocked the comic book community. Previously, it had been unthinkable to kill off such an important character - the girlfriend of the main character and a character with a large fan base. This story arc is considered one of the markers of the end of the Silver Age of Comic Books, and the beginning of the darker, grittier Bronze Age.Ultimate Gwen Stacy's death was also sad has she heard rustling in the bushes so she turned around and was grabbed by small tentacles coming from Ultimate Carnage who killed her the way it killed its other victims: stabbed them in the stomach and absorbed their fluids. The last thing Gwen saw before being turned into a mummy-like corpse was Carnage taking the form of a more solid Peter .Poor Gwen you died so Spiderman wouldn’t have to marry and it made alot of fans sad in one of best and most famous deaths in comic history.

2) Barry Allen

Posted Image

Barry Allen's death in Crisis on Infinite Earths is often regarded as one of the greatest, selfless sacrifices in superhero comics. It's probably why the character wasn't resurrected until Final Crisis. He was dead for 23 years which is alot in comic books. In my opinion no superhero death as the same impact as this one and shows why the Flash is one of greatest heros by doing everything in his power to save the day even if it means his own life.

1) Agent 355 and Ampersand from Y:the last man

Posted Image

If you are wondering why this is #1 you clearly have not read, one of best if not the best comic series ever created Y:the last man.Agent 355 that you've been with on your entire madcap journey gets shot through the head, mere moments after she and Yorick confessed their love for each other. It sounds tacky, but the pacing with which Brian K. Vaughan delivers it is flawless. This is the event leads into the most depressing final issue of all time that made be depressed for whole week.Ampersand's death is almost as sad where Yorick where aged Ampersand during a flashback during Yorick's visit to Agent 355's grave. Yorick, not wanting Ampersand to suffer, feeds him a poisoned grape, and Ampersand dies at 355's grave. There’s been no other comic where character death hits you so hard you feel like you loss good friend and all you were hoping was Yorick to get happy ending for what pain he has had to go though but he ends lone like the last man on earth would be.
